KNOWLEDGE NETWORK COMMUNITY:
GLOBAL UNDERCARRIAGE INFORMATION
(DEALERS & CATERPILLAR?)
Global Undercarriage Information Community created to share information globally on Caterpillar? marketed undercarriage between Undercarriage specialists at the Dealer, Marketing Organizations, Product Support Division, & the Product Groups.
What is the Knowledge Network
? Most formal expression of knowledge sharing at Caterpillar Inc.
? Collection of communities (Ex. undercarriage, engines, GET, marketing forums, etc.)
? Each community has a common interest/ specific need
? Communication takes place in the form of:
o Community Discussions
o Knowledge Entries and Discussions
? Members receive an email when a new community discussion, knowledge entry, or reply is entered
Community Discussion
? Used with shorter term issues
o Ask question, pose a problem
o Provide information
? Immediately posted to community
? Cannot be edited once it is posted

- Used with longer term
issues
- Strategies
- Projects
- On-going issues
- Information is
validated
- Approved by community manager/ delegate before it is posted to community
- Can be edited after it is posted
Knowledge Network Requirements/ Availability
- Requires Corporate Web Security ID
- Email address in Clues must be current in order to receive community emails
- Need to join the Community

- Open to see your involvement in Knowledge Network
- Click My Knowledge Network in the task list
- All your Personal Communities and Knowledge Entries will be listed
- The Communities for which you are a Delegate, Member or Expert are listed
- The Knowledge Entries you have In Draft, In Review, or you have Subscribed/Authored are listed
- The Communities that you have created bookmark links for with "Add to My KN" are listed
Joining a Community
- Joining a community will enable members to receive an email when a new discussion, Knowledge Entry, or reply is entered
- Go to Global
Undercarriage Information Community site:
- https://kn.cat.com/cat.cfm?id=11053
- Join Community by either clicking on the blue Join link in the upper right corner or selecting the Join Community link on left-hand navigation panel
- The Join Community dialog box will appear
- You are now a member of this community
Creating a New Community Discussion
- Community Discussions are intended to handle quick "FYI" messages or questions
- Once created, Community Discussions are not editable
- On the Community Home Page, click Create Community Discussion in the left-hand navigation panel
- Click the Send To field drop-down arrow and select who should receive email notification of this new Community Discussion.
Note: If you want to view the names of the recipients based on your selection, click on View Recipients.
- Type the discussion Subject and Message in their respective fields
- Determine if you would like to change the Retention Date
Note: maximum Retention Date you can have is one year from the date the Community Discussion was created.
- Add attachments by clicking the Change Attachments List button.
- Click the Submit button.
Replying to a Community Discussion
- In the email, click on the reply link for the Community Discussion
OR
- On the Community Home Page, click on the arrow ( ) to the left of the Community Discussion List heading then click on the link of the Community Discussion to which you wish to reply
- Click on Post a Reply in the left-hand navigation panel
- The Create Community Discussion Reply window displays
- Fill in appropriate fields
- Click the Submit button
- The Community Discussion window redisplays with your reply listed below the original discussion. In addition, an email is sent to each recipient associated with the Send To group you selected for your reply
Knowledge Network Help System
- Select Help from main navigation bar
- Click on the arrow ( ) to the left of How Do I? (User) in left-hand navigation panel
- Help tutorials may be selected from left-hand navigation panel
