TERMINATION DATE
January 31, 2007PROBLEM
The final drive planet shafts may need to be replaced on certain 836G Landfill Compactors. The 1920814 and 2235836 Planet Shafts may pit and spall under the roller bearings. If this occurs and they are not replaced the spalling will propagate contaminating the oil damaging other components.AFFECTED PRODUCT

ACTION REQUIRED
Monitor axle SOS as normal and watch for particles during normal axle oil changes. If SOS detects a significant increase in iron of 500 ppm or greater and/or particles are found during normal axle oil change inspect the final drive planet shaft for spalling. If spalling is found replace all twelve planet shafts on the machine.1. Clean the axle arrangement components and inspect components for any permanent damage where a planet shaft spalling failure occurred. This includes cleaning all debris out of the axle housing itself. If a failure occurred on the front axle remove the service brake piston housing to remove any debris that may have collected behind it. Not removing debris will cause wear damage to the new sleeve bearings and other axle arrangement components.
2. Remove and discard the (12) 6T5545 dowels, (12) 1920814 or 2235836 planet shafts, (24) 5D3632 or 6Y9885 roller bearings, (12) 8K0067 spacers, and (24) 8X4552 thrust washers currently in the four final drives.
3. Clean and inspect the bores of the (12) 1920816 planetary gears. Replace any planetary gears with new gears if the bore has pitting, spalling, or deep scratches.
4. Assemble the final drives using the new components provided. Assemble the finals in a clean work area. Clean the parts and lubricate the parts using clean power train oil before assembling. Dip the sleeve bearings in clean oil or completely coat the surfaces to ensure the bearings don't rotate dry against the planetary gear bores or the planet shafts.
