December 2000 793C TRANSMISSION UPGRADES AVAILABLE FOR 793B TRUCKS Announcement Caterpillar Remanufactured Products Group announces an upgrade option for 793B truck owners to install a 793C transmission. This REMAN upgrade transmission allows customers to exchange a 793B Truck transmission core for a 793C transmission. The cost of the upgrade is built into the purchase price of the upgrade transmission part number. Coverage The introduction of this upgrade option gives dealers an additional repair option for 793B transmissions. The chart below gives information as to which part numbers are applicable for each truck model. Please consult your NPR for latest part number information.
The purchase of the 0R9866 is a one time only upgrade for each machine. After the 793B truck has been upgraded with a 0R9866 transmission, the customer will have a 9U9822 arrangement installed and can use a 0R4749 transmission (or other comparable repairs) for subsequent transmission replacements. The 0R4749 and the 0R9866 are the same transmission. The only differences are: the 0R9866 is priced higher than the 0R4749 to allow for the upgrade cost, and the 0R9866 also allows for the return of a core from the 793B truck (6Y5645). Dealers are cautioned not to order a 0R9866 for a replacement of a 9U9822 or 0R4749 transmission, as the cost is higher and you may not return the 9U9822 core for credit. Dealers will find no stock of the 0R9866 if they query the parts system. Caterpillar will seed either a 0R4749 or a 9U9822 to fill 0R9866 orders. Current inventory levels will allow immediate availability of a 0R9866. Since stocking levels will ultimately change, and since dealers should have a good idea of when they will need to upgrade 793B trucks, the ordering of a 0R9866 would best be done via Future Dated Orders. Features and Benefits Customers may want to consider this option for fleet commonality as well as a better life expectancy. The clutches of the 793C transmissions offer increased torque capacity over the former model. Changes to clutch piston design should also ensure increased service life in identical applications. All remanufactured transmissions are
remanufactured incorporating all significant engineering changes. This
will result in transmissions with a service life equal to or greater
than the original transmissions. Show/hide table

Core Attrition Policy
The 0R9866 is currently available and is non-returnable through surplus returns program. Dealers need to also return the 6Y5645 or 0R4008 cores under the time frame of the core attrition policy that became effective January 1, 1998. This policy requires cores to be returned within specific time limits. Failure to return the core within the time limit can result in the loss of the core deposit. See IRM REM97-26, PELE0584 December 1997 and Cat REMAN Newsletter, Issue 16, December 1997 for complete details.
