Transmission Planet Gear Failure May Occur on Certain 797, 797B, and 797F Off-Highway Trucks {3030, 3160}

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The transmission planet gears may fail on the machines listed above. The train five planetary carrier is not sufficiently supported which allows for high stress in the planetary gears and spring pins in certain operating conditions.

Caterpillar is aware of this problem and recommends the following interim corrective action.

In the event of failure, replace the failed 272-5601 Planetary Gear, 447-1647 Spring Pin, and 446-1331 Planetary Shaft Assembly with the same parts respectively.

In the event of failure, replace the failed 274-5106 Bearing, 272-5600 Sun Gear, 302-2638 Planetary Carrier, and 276-6857 Gear As with the same parts respectively.
