Service Tool Requirement

Cat ® Electronic Technician ( ET) Service Tool 2018A or later required for this software release.

Changes Implemented In The Flash File

Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) High Absolute Pressure Strategy

Issue

The previous software release implemented a de-rate based control strategy to protect the engine depending on the EGR absolute pressure.

If the strategy cannot lower the pressure an adequate amount, then the de-rate will not be sufficient to lower EGR Pressure.

These conditions result in a false tripping of a diagnostic code. This false diagnostic code will be logged which can lead to unnecessary machine servicing.

Resolution

Changed the previous de-rate to a closed loop de-rate.

High Crank Case Pressure Level 2 Shutdown

Issue

During a High Crank Case Pressure Level 2 Shutdown, the engine oil is sometimes pushed through the valve seals. This can blow oil through the turbocharger into the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) without sending a shutdown request.

Resolution

A level 2 shutdown event will send an engine shutdown request if configured in service tool. The engine will be allowed to restart after shutdown event.

Engine Control Module (ECM) Unable to Communicate

Issue

The ECM fails to communicate with the Cat ET service tool caused by tripped breaker, or blown fuses due to injector driver capacitor failure.

Resolution

The software will turn off the injector driver circuit during 0 rpm state for applications that have continuous engine control module power. Turning off the injector driver circuit will avoid capacitor failure that can result in ECM replacement.

Engine Restart Failure Without Power Cycling

Issue

Engine fuel delivery is limited on restart which can cause fail to start or no-start conditions.

Resolution

The engine run timer will reset at the 0 rpm state which will activate the correct fuel delivery limits for the starting cycle.

Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) Concentration and Low Conversion Codes

Issue

There have been cases where both the tank refill method and continuous refill method have had a diagnostic code go active, then disappear, and the become active again over a short period.

Resolution

The sensitivity and severity of the DEF concentration has been updated to address false diagnostic codes for DEF concentration and low conversion.

De-Crystal Regeneration Priority over Common Rail System (CRS) Nozzle Heat Cycle

Issue

Currently the CRS nozzle heat cycles are preventing the high carbon evaporation-based Selected Catalyst Reduction (SCR) injector de-crystallization regeneration from running.

The DEF injector failures occurring at early hours on Tier 4 Final in-line engine products are leading to fault codes and inducements which can cause customer downtime.

Resolution

The de-crystallization regeneration will prevent a CRS nozzle heater cycle as long as there is no Nozzle Heater Event level 2.

Implementation of DEF System Flow Evaluation

Issue

There was a high rate of partially blocked DEF injectors replaced under warranty.

Resolution

Changed the DEF flow evaluation based on the DEF injector command and proportional change in DEF pump speed.

Data Health Diagnostic Strategy Robustness

Issue

Diagnostic codes for data link communication have caused inducement to trigger and engine shutdowns.

Complete loss of communication between the engine ECM and after-treatment ECM resulting in code 2348-9 SAE J1939 Data Link #2 : Abnormal Update Rate.

Complete loss of communication between the after-treatment ECM and engine exhaust out NOx sensors, or between the Aftertreatment ECM and the Dosing Control Unit (DCU) resulting in code 5856-9 SAE J1939 Data Link #3 : Abnormal Update Rate.

Resolution

Changed the response time for SAE J1939 Data Link #2 to allow for recovery of the datalink.

Changed the response time for SAE J1939 Data Link #3 to allow for recovery of the datalink.

NOx Sensor Diagnostic Robustness

Issue

-12 and -11 diagnostic codes cause false diagnosis and replacement of NOx sensors. Returned sensors are found to have no fault.

Resolution

For -12 codes the dwell time was increased between the first report and second report. If a second event triggers the -12 code will become active.

Removed the -11 code and rolled the qualification for NOx sensor -11 code logic into the NOx sensor -12 code logic. Troubleshooting is same for the -11 and -12 code.

Strategy Improvements to Existing DEF Quality

Issue

3516-2 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect : The DEF quality sensor is unable to read the DEF concentration due to an optical path obstruction. The DEF concentration is high or low.

Resolution

Estimated DEF level lowered to less than 20% to reduce false codes.

The conditions for low/high DEF concentration and pass condition changes:

Allow codes to reset during keyswitch ON and engine off conditions.

Allow codes to reset when below the ambient temperature threshold conditions.

EGR Mass Flow Events Improvements

Issue

Variances in engine speed and fuel can cause variances in EGR flow rate. These changes can trigger a low flow code. This low flow rate occurs at 1500 rpm and 1950 rpm engine speed.

Resolution

Added filtered desired value to isolate the high frequencies.

Operator Inducement Emergency Override Reset

Issue

The "Operator Inducement Emergency Override Timer Reset" currently allows resetting even though the override feature was never activated.

Resolution

Cat ET version 2017C or later will look at the "Reset" and "Not Reset" states.

Cat ET will use two new states "Reset Required" and "Reset Not Required" Engine Emissions Operator Inducement Emergency Override Enable Status.

Cat ET will gray out the "Emergency Override Reset" feature whenever it is set to "Reset Not Required".

If the "Enabled" feature has been activated with time accrued, the ECM software will be set to "Reset Required". Cat ET will display the "Emergency Override Reset" feature.

If no time has accrued, the ECM software will set the feature to "Reset Not Required". Cat ET will gray out the Emergency Override Resetfeature.

CRS Updates for DPF Inlet Temperature

Issue

The "DPF Inlet Temperature" overshoots during the work cycle.

Resolution

Reduced the air-fuel-ratio to improve effectiveness for fail to ignite and high temperatures.

Cold Start Without Starting Aids

Issue

Hard starting at −9° C (16° F) and above when not using an ether aid assist.

Resolution

Updated the starting maps to address ignition delay when not utilizing ether as a starting aid.

DEF Quality Sensor Unknown Reagent Type with NOx Check

Issue

During an unknown reagent event, the NOx check has been changed that it only passes or does not pass. This condition is where DEF quality sensor is detecting an unknown reagent type and the DEF quality is low. The ECM will not trip an inducement code.

Resolution

During an unknown reagent even if a -31 code becomes active, check the NOx check status.

If there is an unknown reagent event and the Nox check has run and has passed, the new software will not trip code 1364.

If the NOx check has run and not passed within approved time and the erratic code is not active, and erratic quality has been identified, a 1364 code will be triggered.

NOx Rationality Check for Performance of DEF Quality Sensor

Issue

The NOx rationality check strategy sample time was too short under certain speed load conditions.

Resolution

Increased the NOx check sample count after the DEF Quality Sensor or NOx check failure.

Added DEF Quality Sensor not reading no result and the NOx rationality reading no result will trip the low DEF concentration code.
