Product Support Program For Replacing The Case And Frame Assembly On Certain D5H LGP Tractors Equipped With A 8Z7528 Or 8Z7530 Modification (D5H Custom Skidders) Caterpillar

NOTE: The information supplied in this service letter may not be valid after the termination date of this program. Do not perform the work outlined in this Service Letter after the termination date without first contacting your Caterpillar product analyst.

NOTE: This Program can be administered either before or after a failure. In either case the decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PSPS4703" as the Part Number and "7755" as the Group Number. If administered before failure, use "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "T" as the SIMS Description Code. If administered after failure, use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

NOTE: This Program does not cancel or replace the April 25, 1990 Service Letter - PS4448: Product Support Program For Repair Of Cracks And Reinforcement Of The Case And Frame Assembly On D5H Custom Skidders. Dealers can make repairs under either of the two Programs.

NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the September 9, 1991 Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Parts Needed and Action Required.

Termination Date

Problem

The D5H Custom Skidder has experienced case and main frame cracking. Cracking may result in oil leaking from the transmission case into the frame rails, and eventually visible external oil leaks may occur. Structural repairs to the frame have been partially successful. This product support package provides a new cast steel frame (6Y8698) which dealers can sell to customers who prefer to invest in added machine value, and eliminate the risk of further downtime and repair.

Action Required

Replace the existing case and frame assembly with a new 6Y8698 Case and Frame Assembly.

NOTE: The case and frame assembly can be done as a scheduled repair at the same time as other major service work or while implementing other Programs.

NOTE: When locating the grapple sub-frame on the new cast frame, the dowel holes will have to be relocated.

NOTE: The engine mounting bolts at the flywheel support have changed on the new frame. The former frame had a 1" fine thread and the new frame has a " coarse thread. Replace the former mounts with the new ones.

NOTE: External hydraulic oil lines for machine serial numbers 4KD1-393. Units built in that range had internal rolled-in tubes for the hydraulic lines from the implement pump to the lift cylinders. The new frame does not have these tubes so external hoses must be used. See Special Instruction SEHS8983.

NOTE: The new frame does not have the additional spaces in the saddle. This is a change to allow more radial movement of the equalizer bar as the track roller frame pivots about the pivot shaft. Do not add spacers in this area.

NOTE: Parts showing damage or wear other than the parts listed under the heading Parts Needed should be replaced at the dealers discretion. The cost of any such repairs should be discussed and understood by the customer and dealer prior to any rework. This Program provides support for frame replacement only.

NOTE: Before installing the equalizer bar, thoroughly pack the center pin cavity with grease, and grease the center pin. (The equalizer bar pin on the former frame is too short. A new 6Y8248 Pin needs to be installed along with the new remote lube lines.)

Service Claim Allowances

The intent of this program is to allow a dealer to sell this major product update to a customer at an attractive price, with no dealer contribution.

A special price for the 6Y8698 frame ($28,821 D/N reduced to $10,000 D/N) was established for the purpose of this product support program only. It is suggested that the dealer sell the frame to prospective customers for a package price of $10,000, $12,000 or $15,000 depending upon if their machines have 0-2500 Hrs., 2500-4500 Hrs. , or 4501-up Hrs. respectively.
