Note: Regular maintenance and frequent inspections are routine precautions. Practice preventive maintenance before damage occurs. Preventive maintenance can help to avoid a failure. If a failure occurs, an accurate diagnosis of the cause can prevent a recurrence. Information is available to analyze the failures from the piston pump and the motor. Refer to Special Publication, SEBD0641, "Analyzing Axial Piston Pump and Motor Failures".

Note: Many times, the installation of new parts is not necessary. The installation of used parts during reconditioning is acceptable. Used parts can result in a substantial cost reduction. Reuse information is available on piston pumps and motors. Refer to Guideline For Reusable Parts, SEBF8032, "Piston Pumps and Motors". During reconditioning, correct any conditions that might have caused the original failure.

Note: The hydraulic oil must be contained in the proper manner. Refer to Special Publication, NENG7004, "Contamination Control Catalog".

Note: Put identification marks on all lines, on all hoses, on all wires, and on all tubes for installation purposes. Plug all lines, hoses, and tubes. This helps to prevent fluid loss and this helps to keep contaminants from entering the system.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the work tools have been lowered to the ground, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

  1. Use Tooling (B) in order to create a vacuum in the hydraulic tank. This will stop any excess oil from draining during the removal procedure.

  12. Use chains and Tooling (A) in order to secure travel motor (13), as shown.

  13. Remove bolts (14) and the washers. Remove travel motor (13) from the machine. The weight of the travel motor is approximately 45 kg (100 lb).

  14. Remove coupler (15) from the spline of the travel motor.

Note: The coupler may not come with the spline. The coupler may stay in the transmission.
