NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, PERJ1017, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat® products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the assembly procedure, the mounting surfaces for the components should be thoroughly cleaned.

  1. Install Tool (A) (not shown) in order to remove differential carrier assembly (1) from Tool (B).

    Illustration 2g00722889

  2. Apply an approximate 3.175 mm (0.125 inch) bead of 3S-6252 Sealant (2) along mounting surface (3) of the axle housing (4) for the differential carrier.

    Illustration 3g00722919

  3. Use a suitable lift in order to install differential carrier assembly (1) onto axle housing (4). Remove Tool (A).

    Illustration 4g00722921

  4. Reinstall two bolts (6) into seal flange (7).

    Tighten the bolts to the following torque: ... 130 ± 27 N·m (95 ± 20 lb ft)

  5. Install nuts (5) that secure differential carrier assembly (1) to the axle housing (4).

    Tighten the nuts to the following torque: ... 183 ± 34 N·m (135 ± 25 lb ft)

  6. Position the spider brake assembly (9) onto the axle spindle. Install bolts (8) that secure the spider brake assembly and the axle spindle to the axle housing.

    Tighten the bolts to the following torque: ... 230 ± 27 N·m (170 ± 20 lb ft)

Note: Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Brake Shoes - Install" if the brake shoes were removed from the spider assembly.

    NOTICE

Caution must be observed when the brake drum is installed in order to prevent damage to the seal.

  7. Use a suitable lifting device and Tool (C) in order to install brake drum (10) on the axle housing.

  8. Position dust shield (12) and install three bolts (11) and washers.

    Tighten the bolts to the following torque: ... 115 ± 14 N·m (85 ± 10 lb ft)

  9. Install planetary ring gear hub (13) in the brake drum.

    Illustration 9g00722945

  10. Install wheel bearing adjusting nut (16). Perform the following procedure in order to adjust the wheel bearings:

    1. Use Tool (D) to tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut to the following torque in order to seat the wheel bearings: 542 N·m (400 lb ft)

Note: The hub must be rotated in both directions while the wheel bearing adjusting nut is tightened.

    2. Rap the hub several times with a soft faced hammer. Then use Tool (D) in order to tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut to the following torque: 542 N·m (400 lb ft)

    3. Loosen the wheel bearing adjusting nut in order to relieve the preload on the wheel bearings. The wheel bearing adjusting nut should have a torque of 0 N·m (0 lb ft).

    4. Determine the rolling torque of the wheel hub. The torque value must be obtained while the hub is rotated at a steady rate. Record the torque value that is obtained.

    5. Tighten the wheel bearing adjusting nut in order to increase the rolling torque of the wheel hub.

    6. Recheck the rolling torque of the wheel hub. The rolling torque of the wheel hub that was recorded in Step 10d should have an increase of 8 to 14 N·m (6 to 10 lb ft).

  11. Position lock (15) for the wheel bearing adjusting nut (16). Secure the lock in place with allen head screws (14).

    Tighten the allen head screws to the following torque: ... 47 ± 7 N·m (35 ± 5 lb ft)

Note: The lock for the wheel bearing adjusting nut can be installed in two positions. The first position is shown in Illustration 9 and the second position is shown in Illustration 10.

    Illustration 10g00722947

  12. Install planetary ring gear (17) into brake drum (10). Ensure that the teeth of the planetary ring gear are aligned with the teeth of planetary ring gear hub (13).

  13. Install the following items as an assembly into the axle housing:

    • Thrust washer (20)

    • Axle shaft (18)

    • Gear (19)

    • Clip (21)

Note: If the clip was removed, use Tool (E) to install the clip.

  14. Apply an approximate 3.175 mm (0.125 inch) bead of 3S-6252 Sealant along mounting surface of the brake drum for the planetary wheel end.

    Illustration 12g00722956

  15. Install planetary wheel end (23) into brake drum (10).

Note: Ensure that the gears are aligned during the installation of the planetary wheel end.

  16. Install bolts (22) and washers that secure planetary wheel end (23) to brake drum (10).

    Tighten the bolts to the following torque: ... 156 ± 20 N·m (115 ± 15 lb ft)

End By:

  1. Install the axle. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Axle - Install".
