Connecting Rods

Usage:

TYPICAL ILLUSTRATION

(1) Pin diameter ... 1.9998 ± .0002 in.(50.795 ± 0.005 mm)

(2) Bore in bearing for the piston pin ... 2.0013 ± .0003 in.(50.833 ± 0.008 mm)

Maximum permissible clearance between pin and bore in the bearing (worn) ... .003 in.(0.08 mm)

(3) Distance from center of piston pin to center of bearing for crankshaft ... 12.630 ± .001 in.(320.802 ± 0.025 mm)

(4) Torque for bolts:

1. Put 9M3710 or 4S9416 Anti-Seize Compound on bolt threads and bolt head seats.

2. First tighten both bolts to ... 90 ± 5 lb. ft.(122 ± 7 N·m)

3. Put a mark on connecting rod and head of each bolt.

4. Tighten bolts farther from mark on connecting rod ... 120°

After tightening connecting rod bolts; end clearance (B) between bearing caps ... .012 to .021 in.(0.305 to 0.533 mm)

NOTE: When installed on the crankshaft the wide faces (A) of connecting rods must be toward the shoulders of the crankshaft as shown.

(5) Clearance between surface of crankshaft (journal) and inside diameter of connecting rod bearing ... .0033 to .0071 in.(0.084 to 0.180 mm)

Maximum permissible clearance of used bearing and worn bearing surface (journal) ... .008 in.(0.20 mm)

(6) Bore in connecting rods for bearings ... 4.7205 ± .0005 in.(119.901 ± 0.013 mm)

.005 in. (0.13 mm) Oversize (larger than Original) bore in connecting rods for bearings ... 4.7255 ± .0005 in.(120.028 ± 0.013 mm)

.010 in. (0.25 mm) Oversize (larger than original) bore in connecting rods for bearings ... 4.7305 ± .0005 in.(120.155 ± 0.013 mm)

(7) Height of dowel ... .068 ± .010 in.(1.73 ± 0.25 mm)

NOTE: Connecting rod bearings in later engines have dowels in the connecting rod for bearing location (early connecting rods have tabs). The later rods are marked "Even Cyl Only" and "Odd Cyl Only." The rods must be installed in the correct bank of the cylinder block and the part numbers on the rods must be toward the flywheel. The later connecting rods can be installed in earlier cylinder blocks when the correct cooling jets for the pistons are installed. Refer to Special Instruction (GEG02495) for complete instructions.

4N4261 Connecting Rod:

Install the piston on the connecting rod with the "V" mark on the piston on the same side as the connecting rod cap.

4N9001 and 4N9002 Connecting Rods:

Install the pistons on these connecting rods as shown.
