Crankshaft for 3408 Engine

(1) Maximum length of pin out of crankshaft face ... 6.4 mm (0.25 inch)

(2) Thrust plates at center main bearing

(3) End play for the new crankshaft ... 0.13 to 0.50 mm (0.005 to 0.020 inch)

(4) Minimum torque for five plugs ... 23 N·m (17 lb ft)

Make a hole with a punch on the crankshaft in order to hold the plug tightly.

(5) Length of dowel out of the crankshaft ... 4.1 ± 0.5 mm (0.16 ± 0.02 inch)

(6) Rear seal

If the seal and the sleeve have been separated, the rear seal cannot be used. Install the rear seal in the flywheel housing. The seal position is shown in the illustration. See Special Instruction SMHS8508.

Refer to the following procedure to check installation.

Distance from rear face of crankshaft to sleeve (Dimension A) ... 1.5 ± 0.5 mm (0.06 ± 0.02 inch)

Distance from edge of sleeve to seal (Dimension B) ... 6.1 ± 0.6 mm (0.240 ± 0.024 inch)

Note: The same procedure will be used with a crankshaft that has a crankshaft rear gear.

(7) Maximum permissible temperature of the gear for installation on the crankshaft ... 232 °C (450 °F)

Note: Install gear with V mark to the outside.

(8) Refer to Connecting Rod Bearings.

(9) Refer to Main Bearings.

(10) Front seal

If the seal and the sleeve have been separated, the front seal cannot be used. Install the front seal in the front accessory drive housing. The seal position is shown in the illustration. See Special Instruction, SMHS8508.

Refer to the following procedure to check installation.

The sleeve must be flush with the front face of the crankshaft within the following value. ... ± 0.13 mm (± 0.005 inch)

Distance from edge of sleeve to seal (Dimension C) ... 4.9 ± 0.6 mm (0.19 ± 0.02 inch)
