This special instruction provides the information needed to adjust the steering shaft on the listed machines in the field. The adjustment is made when the steering shaft rubs the 240-2314 Plate As .
Important Safety Information
Do not perform any procedure in this special instruction until you have read this special instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should also be observed.
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools in order to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the product are not all inclusive. If the tools, the procedure, and the work method are not recommended by Caterpillar, ensure that the tools, the procedure, and the work method are safe for everyone.
Ensure that the product will not be damaged or the product will be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or the repair procedures.
Prepare the Machine for Maintenance
Refer to the above listed information for your machine in order to prepare the machine for maintenance.
Steering System Oil Level
Before any adjustments are made to the machine, ensure that the steering system oil level is correct. Refer to the above listed information for your machine in order to check the steering system oil level.
After the steering system oil is at the correct level, start the machine in order to circulate the steering system oil.
Adjustment Procedure
- Loosen two bolts (A) that secure plate assembly (B). Plate assembly (B) has a foam seal on the back side, loosen bolts (A) enough to allow plate assembly (B) to move freely.
Note: Prying plate assembly (B) loose from the cab may be required.

- With the engine running, rotate the steering wheel fully from left to right and back again. As the steering column rotates, find the center point of plate assembly (B) the point at which the column can rotate freely, without rubbing on the inside of the tubular section of plate assembly (B) .
- After adjusting plate assembly (B), tighten bolts (A), alternating from bolt to bolt as tightening. Ensure that plate assembly (B) is tightened evenly in order to prevent plate assembly (B) from twisting and causing the column to rub on plate assembly (B) .
- Before bolts (A) are tight, rotate the steering wheel one last time in order to ensure proper adjustment.
- Torque bolts (A) to 30 ± 7 N·m (22 ± 5 lb ft)
