Introduction

This Special Instruction include the information needed to install an aftermarket grade control system on certain Series F Pavers and Series SE Screeds. This instruction is intended to show the locations of the wiring necessary to connect an aftermarket grade control system to power, ground, left and right tow point valves.

Installation Procedure

There are two connectors on each side of the screed that can be used to connect an aftermarket grade control system. Refer to illustrations for connector locations. Verify that correct connector is located by comparing the wire colors in the descriptions below.

Connections on main screed frame will be typically used for vibratory screed applications. (Grade control box is stationary on main screed frame).

Connections at the end of screed extensions will be typically used for tamper screed applications. (Grade control box will move with extender).

The tow point control wires are connected to four relays inside the power distribution module. (PDM) on the paver. The relays are controlled by the paver ECM, and the time delay is configured through the paver display. No additional wiring is necessary for the tow point control.

The machine control software will detect if a Caterpillar or aftermarket grade control system is installed. There is no configuration setting to turn on or off in the machine configuration file.

Wiring points for the right side 12 pin connectors:

  • 24 V power: Position #1, 122 Blue or Pink

  • Ground: Position #3, 200 Black

  • Right tow point RAISE: Position #7, 894 Yellow

  • Right tow point LOWER: Position #8, 895 Green

If the Caterpillar Grade Control system is installed and the customer wishes to use a different grade control system, take the following actions:

  • Install 459-2810 Console Harness As (Jumper Plug) on the grade control ECM plug. The grade control ECM is located under the right operator station. The ECM may remain bolted in place, but the ECM harness must be disconnected and 459-2810 Console Harness As (Jumper Plug) installed to the machine harness.

  • Install 442-6181 Connector Receptacle As (jumper plug) to screed connection MR-16. The MR-C16 connector is located on the right side of the main screed. Installation of 442-6181 Connector Receptacle As (jumper plug) correctly configures the machine Ethernet wires if no Caterpillar Grade Control is installed.

Note: There are other wires in these connectors. These wires are only used if the machine is equipped with the Caterpillar Grade Control System.

Note: The installation of all aftermarket grade control parts is the customer responsibility. Caterpillar is not responsible for mounting brackets or wiring past the machine connectors.

Note: Certain aftermarket grade controls may malfunction when connected to the F Series paver. Connecting diodes to the tow point wires adjacent to the machine ECM will prevent the aftermarket system from malfunctioning. The tow point solenoid wires need to be removed from the J1 connecter and connected to the 200-1898 Arc Suppressor. Jumper wires are then added in between the diode and machine ECM. See Illustration 4 for wiring details.
