Think Safety

European Union Compliant, CE marked

Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs. A person must be alert to potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.

Improper operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair of this product can be dangerous and could result in injury or death.

Do not operate or perform any lubrication, maintenance, or repair on this product until you have read and understood the Tool Operating Manual.

Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this manual and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons.

The hazards are identified by the "Safety Alert Symbol" and followed by a "Signal Word" such as "DANGER","WARNING", or "CAUTION". The Safety Alert "WARNING" label is shown below.

A non-exhaustive list of operations that may cause product damage are identified by "NOTICE" labels on the product and in this publication.

Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard. The warnings in this publication and on the product are, therefore, not all inclusive. If a tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique that is not recommended by Caterpillar is used, the operator must be sure that the procedures are safe. The operator must also be sure that the product will not be damaged or made unsafe by any unspecified procedures.

The information, specifications, and illustrations in this publication are based on information that was available at the time that the publication was written. The specifications, torques, pressures, measurements, adjustments, illustrations, and other items can change at any time. These changes can affect the service that is given to the product. Obtain the complete and most current information before you start any job.

When replacement parts are required for this product Caterpillar recommends using Caterpillar replacement parts or parts with equivalent specifications including, but not limited to, physical dimensions, type, strength, and material.

Introduction

The 456-4449 Support Device is used to support different components during remove and install procedures.

The support device is designed to be used in a simple supported beam setup.

Illustration 3g03693402

The working load limit of the support device is 272.15 kg (600 lb). This is calculated in the worst case scenario, which is a load in the center and the supports are at the extreme edges of the beam.

It is required that the load of the supporting device is located at the center of the beam. Use a lifting strap or shackle to achieve this result.

Double check your location using a tape measure. Measure from both ends to ensure a center load.

If the load is unbalanced, the calculations below are not for your loading condition.

Engineering Specifications of the 456-4449 Support Beam

Key engineering values are calculated as follows for a 456-4449 square tube:

Engineering Calculations at Worst Case

Illustration 6g03694221

Here we display a specific beam loading case. Note that the maximum stress quoted is a positive number, and corresponds to the largest stress magnitude in the beam. It does not distinguish between tension or compression (this distinction depends on which side of the beam's neutral plane your c input corresponds).

Table 1
Input     Variable     Value     Units
Length of Beam     L     6     ft
Load on Beam     P     600     lbf
Young's Modulus     E     29000000     psi
Moment of Inertia     I     0.91146     inch ^4
Section Modulus     Z     0.91146     inch ^3
Ultimate Tensile Strength     --     72809     psi
Yield Strength     --     54390     psi

Moment and Max Bending Stress

The key take away here is that the maximum stress at 272.15 kg (600 lb) of load is 81358.16 kPa (11800 psi) which is well below the yield strength for the selected steel.

This tool has a safety factor of 4.6 to ensure a safe working tool.

There is an additional safety factor built into the tool because your loading condition will not actually be at the extreme limits of the tube. You will be somewhere inside the extreme edges of the support beam, which will ultimately reduce the amount of stress on the beam.

Inspection and Maintenance

Do not use if tube is bent.

Tool Disposal

At the end of the operational life of the tool, destroy the tool and dispose of as scrap.
