Cat MT4400D AC Off-Highway Truck Advisor Monitoring System Caterpillar

Warning Operation

Usage:

MT4400D AC MH4
The Cat® monitoring system (VIMSTM 3G) and the display (Advisor) system notifies the operator of an immediate impending problem with a machine system. Warning operation begins when the main display module:

  • Receives a problem signal

  • Detects a problem with the control system

Switches, sensors, and other electronic control modules (ECMs) on the machine provide signals to the main display module. A problem signal reflects an abnormal machine condition. The problem signals are the following conditions:

Open switch - When a condition exceeds the trip point of the switch, the switch opens.

Sensor signal exceeds the limits - The main display module determines the limits.

Abnormal condition that is detected by another ECM - The abnormal condition is then communicated over the CAN data link to the main display module.

The main display module analyzes the problem signals and the display components of the main display module activate the appropriate warning indications. The warning indications are:

  • The status indicator illuminates.

  • The action lamp flashes. The lamp is on for one second and off for 2 seconds.

  • The action alarm sounds. The alarm is on for one second off for 2 seconds.

  • The action alarm sounds. During a Level 2-S warning, the alarm sounds continuously.

Note: More than one input is required to activate warning indications. The main display module decides when the warning indications are activated.

Warning Categories

Problems from the machine system are classified into four warning categories, based on the severity of the problem. The categories dictate the required operator response. Warning category 1 represents the least severe problem and warning category 3 represents the most severe problem. The warning categories are identified for the operator according to the combination of warning indications that are active. See the Table 1 for warning operation.

Reference Operation and Maintenance Manual

Table 1
WARNING OPERATION
Warning Category     Warning Indications (1)     Required Operator Action     Possible Result (4)
Status Indicator Flashes (2) Action Lamp Flashes     Action Alarm Sounds
1     X             No immediate action required. The system needs attention soon.     No harmful or damaging effects.
2     X     X         Change machine operation or perform maintenance to the system.     Severe damage to components.
2-S     X     X     (5)     Immediately change the machine operation.     Severe damage to machine components.
3     X     X     (3)     Immediately perform a safe engine shutdown.     Operator injury or severe damage to components.
( 1 ) The active warning indications are marked with an "X".
( 4 ) Possible result if no operator action is taken.
( 2 ) Based on the problem detected, the specific status indicator will illuminate.
( 5 ) The alarm is on continuously.
( 3 ) Pulsating alarm.

Warning Messages

During the normal operation mode and the menu mode, the Advisor display may be interrupted by a warning message. Warning messages are displayed when important instructions or information need to be displayed.

If the warning is a Level 1 or a Level 2, the message may be acknowledged by pressing the "OK" button. When the "OK" button is pressed, the message will disappear from the screen. Cycle the power to view the Level 1 or a Level 2 warning message after the message has been acknowledged.

If the severity of the warning is Level 3, the message will not be removable with the "OK" button. The message will only disappear when the problem no longer exists or when the machine is shut down.

The warning message gives indications of the problem. A troubleshooting code and an instruction for the operator are displayed.

Engine Shutdown Events

VIMS stops the engine when any one or more of the following engine shutdown events exist:

  • Low engine oil level

  • Low engine oil pressure

  • Generator phase imbalance (level 3 drive train fault)

All of the following conditions must also be met before an engine shutdown event will cause VIMS to shut down the engine:

  • The ground speed must be zero.

  • The shift control lever must be in the Neutral position and the park brake should be applied.

  • A throttle command must not be active.

The following events will warn the operator before VIMS will shut down the engine:

  • A warning category 3 will occur when the engine oil level is low and the engine is running. Advisor will inform the operator of low engine oil level. Advisor will also instruct the operator to add oil immediately.

  • A warning category 3 will occur when the engine oil pressure is low and the engine is running. Advisor will inform the operator of low engine oil pressure. Advisor will also instruct the operator to stop the engine immediately.

  • A warning category 3 will occur when there is a current imbalance on the output side of the generator. Advisor will also instruct the operator to stop the engine immediately.

Operation

If the engine is stopped by an engine shutdown event, VIMS will allow the engine to be started.

If the engine is shut down because of an engine shutdown event, the event list in VIMS will show the event that caused the shutdown.

Action Alarm

If a Level 3 warning is active, the action alarm will sound a pulsing tone. A Level 3 warning requires an immediate safe machine shutdown. The action alarm will sound to alert the machine operator that immediate action is required.
