The secondary steering system provides temporary steering control when the primary steering system does not operate properly. A failure in the primary steering system will result in low oil pressure in the steering system. A failure in the primary steering system can occur for any of the following reasons:
- Steering/implement pump failure
- Engine failure
- Failure of the priority valve

If steering/pilot pump (1) or the engine fails, primary steering pressure switch (6) closes. Primary steering pressure switch (6) closes due to low oil pressure in the steering system. Primary steering pressure switch (6) activates an action alarm and primary steering indicator (18) in the cab.
The control box activates the relay for secondary steering pump and electric motor (3). Secondary steering pump and electric motor (3) pumps steering oil to the steering system. The steering oil flows through secondary steering valve (5) to steering metering pump (10). The steering oil pumped from the secondary steering pump and electric motor (3) causes secondary steering pressure switch (4) to close. Secondary steering pressure switch (4) activates secondary steering indicator (18) in the cab.
NOTICE |
---|
The alarm system indicates that the primary steering system has failed. Use the secondary steering system to steer the machine to the nearest convenient location. When the machine comes to a complete stop, turn the start switch key to the OFF position. Continuing to operate the machine may result in damage to the system. |
The condition of the secondary steering is tested during engine start-up. Secondary steering indicator (18) becomes illuminated in order to verify that the system is pressurized during the three second test.
