Steering Pilot Pressure - Test and Adjust

Usage:

814F II BXG

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

ReferenceFor the correct procedure to relieve any hydraulic oil pressure that may be in the steering system, refer to the Service Manual module Testing and Adjusting, "System Pressure - Release" for the machine that is being tested.

    (1) Pilot system pressure tap.

  1. Attach the correct hose and the pressure gauge to pressure tap (1) .

  1. Start and run the engine at high idle rpm. The pressure reading with the oil at normal temperature is 2896 ± 138 kPa (420 ± 20 psi).

  1. If the pressure reading is not correct, stop the engine.

  1. Move the brake pedal in order to release the pilot pressure that is in the brake accumulators.

  1. Move the control valves to all positions in order to release any pressure in the implement pilot circuits.

  1. The breaker relief valve is located on the top of the hydraulic oil tank. In order to relieve all of the pressure in the hydraulic oil tank, push in the plunger on the breaker relief valve until all the hydraulic pressure is released.

If the machine is not equipped with a breaker relief valve on the hydraulic tank, slowly loosen the filler cap in order to relieve the pressure.

    (2) Steering pilot pressure reducing valve. (3) Internal adjustment screw

  1. Adjust the pilot pressure by using a 8 mm (0.32 inch) allen wrench. Turn the internal adjustment screw (3) counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure or turn the adjustment screw clockwise in order to increase the pressure.

  1. Repeat step 4.

  1. If pressure reading is correct, stop the engine. Remove the test equipment from pressure tap (1) .

  1. If pressure reading is not correct stop the engine and repeat steps 4 through 8.
