The difference between the time for a right turn and the time for a left turn must not be more than 0.3 second. The time must not increase more than 0.2 second when the brake is activated.
When the steering time has a difference of 0.3 second between a full right turn and a full left turn perform the following procedure:

- Remove end cover (4) from the steering control valve (1) .
- Add flow balance shims (2) in order to decrease the steering time for the right turn and increase the steering time for the left turn. If the flow balance shims are removed, the result is opposite.
- Flow balance shims (2) are available in two thicknesses. Two 5J-4776 Shims will change the steering time by approximately 0.05 second at high idle. Two 4J-8224 Shims will change the steering time by approximately 0.1 seconds at high idle.
The following example demonstrates the adjustment procedure for the steering time:
The time for a right turn is 0.4 second faster than a left turn. Flow balance shims (2) must be added in order to decrease the difference between the times. Time for the right turn is lowered approximately 0.2 second by adding four 4J-8224 Shims. Time for the left turn is raised 0.2 second by adding these four flow balance shims. The two times are now approximately equal.
- Replace end cover (4) on control valve (1).
If both steering times are slow, cylinder flow shims (3) must be added. One 4J-6806 Shim will change the steering times at high idle by approximately 0.1 seconds.
