Steering System Pressure - Test and Adjust

Usage:

814F II BXG

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.

Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Always use a board or cardboard when checking for a leak.

----------------------

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from machine articulation or movement.

Machine frames can move and a person can be crushed.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames before working on machine.

----------------------

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Steering frame lock is in LOCKED position.

  1. Install the steering frame lock in the LOCKED position.

  1. Assemble the necessary hoses and install a pressure gauge 0 to 28000 kPa (0 to 4100 psi) to steering system pressure test tap (3) .

  1. Start the engine and operate the engine at high idle.

  1. Turn the steering wheel in both directions until the relief valve opens. The correct relief valve pressure setting is 17225 ± 340 kPa (2500 ± 50 psi).

  1. There is a problem in the shuttle valve if the pressure is not equal in both directions. The pressure is the same pressure in both directions but the pressure is incorrect. Then, a main relief valve adjustment is necessary.

  1. Stop the engine.

    (1) Relief valve adjustment screw. (2) Locknut.

  1. Loosen locknut (2) .

  1. Turn relief valve adjustment screw (1) clockwise in order to increase the pressure setting or turn relief valve adjustment screw (1) counterclockwise in order to decrease the pressure setting. Tighten locknut (2) .

  1. Start the engine and operate the engine at high idle.

  1. Turn the steering wheel in both directions until the relief valve opens. Note the indication on the gauge. The correct relief pressure setting is 17225 ± 340 kPa (2500 ± 50 psi).

  1. After the correct relief valve pressure setting is reached, stop the engine. Remove the pressure gauge from the pressure tap.

Steering frame lock is in the STORED position.

  1. Move the steering frame lock to the STORED position.
