Rack Shut-Off Solenoid Can Be Removed And Engine Started When There Is An Emergency

Usage:

All 3208 Engines Equipped With Rack Shut-Off Solenoids

Most Caterpillar 3208 Engines are equipped with a fuel rack shut-off solenoid. This solenoid is energized during engine operation.

However, a loss of electrical power or a short in the solenoid circuit that decreases current to the solenoid, will cause the solenoid to shut off the fuel rack, thus stopping the engine.

If the engine turns over but cannot be restarted, an emergency procedure can be used to bypass the shut-off solenoid.

First, remove the two bolts which fasten the shut-off solenoid to the fuel injection pump cover and remove the solenoid. See the illustration. Then, pull up on the rack and start the engine.

NOTICE

Do not allow the solenoid wire to touch any metal or a short circuit will result.

------ WARNING! ------

This procedure bypasses the shut-off solenoid. Thus, the disconnect switch will not shut off the engine. The only way to shut off the engine is to move the exposed lever in the fuel injection pump down.

-------WARNING!-------

This procedure is to be used only in an emergency.
