Disassembly Information

Start By:

  1. Remove the rear steering cylinder.

Note: Do not remove the cylinder until the sensor has been removed from the cylinder tube.

  1. After masking the cylinder rod to avoid undesired collision of the rod surface, use retaining ring pliers to remove flat circlip (4).

  2. Gently hammer gland (3) inward by approximately 1.3 cm (0.50 inch) until snap ring (5) is accessible.

  3. Remove snap ring (5).

  4. Use a plastic hammer to push rod assembly (1) and gland (3) out of the cylinder tube.

  5. Remove gland (3) from the rod.

Note: Magnetic ring (yellow dot) (15) and magnetic ring (no dot) (16) are not seals.

  6. Remove all seals from the grooves. Do not reuse the removed seals.

Assembly Information

  1. Apply grease or mineral oil to gland (3) and the grooves of piston (1).

Note: Do not over-expand magnetic ring (15) and magnetic ring (16). Magnetic ring (15) and magnetic ring (16) are fragile and can be broken.

  2. If removed, install magnetic ring (15) and magnetic ring (16) onto piston (1). Magnetic ring (15) is identified with a yellow paint dot. Install magnetic ring (15) close to the seal groove in piston (1).

Magnetic ring (16) does not have a paint dot. Install magnetic ring (16) in the other groove that is next to the end of piston (1).

    Illustration 6g06314986

Note: Do not scratch or damage the surface of piston seal O-ring (12B).

  3. Install piston seal O-ring (12B) into the empty piston groove. (Tooling: Screw driver, oiled or greased.)

  4. Install piston seal (12A) onto piston seal O-ring (12B). (Tooling: Screw driver, oiled or greased.)

  5. Install piston guide ring (13) into the piston groove. (The proper groove is the single groove, at the other of side of the grooves for the magnetic rings).

Note: Mind the orientation of the "U" shaped seals: Make sure that the concave shape of the "U" shaped seals face the oil chamber.

Note: Important: Make sure that the backup rings stay at opposite side than the oil-in-pressure!

  6. Install rod seals (11) and backup rings (10) in the grooves on gland (3) and on housing (2). (Tooling: Rod seal installation tool, three-prongs.)

  7. Install rod wipers (9) into the grooves on gland (3) and on housing (2). (Tooling: Rod seal installation tool, three-prongs.)

Note: Do not scratch or damage the seal lips.

  8. Install static seal (14) into gland (3) outer groove. (Tooling: Screw driver, oiled or greased.)

  9. Gently slide gland (3) over rod assembly (1).

  10. Gently fit piston rod assembly (1) into housing (2).

  11. Gently hammer gland (3) into the tube until the groove for round snap ring (5) is accessible.

  12. Fit round snap ring (5) into the tube groove. (Tooling: Screw driver.)

  13. Move gland (3) outwards as much as possible by pushing out rod (1).

  14. After masking the cylinder rod to avoid undesired collision of the rod surface, fit flat circlip (4) into the groove on gland (3). (Tooling: circlip pliers).

  15. If removed, install flange (7). Mind orientation.

  16. Match hole (B1) on flange (7) with blind hole (B2) on housing (2).

  17. Push slotted pin (8) through hole (B1) until slotted pin (8) stops.

  18. Install snap ring (6) onto the tube OD, to enter the appropriate groove.
