Installation And Wheel Bearing Adjustment Procedure
Location of parts being assembled.
1. Disassemble the final drive and wheel group according to the Service Manual.
2. Install the 6V3308 and 4F2041 bearing cups into the new 8X6843 Wheel Assembly. Use a feeler gauge to confirm that both cups are fully seated.
3. Install the 9G5315 Seal Group. The rubber toric rings and all surfaces contacting them must be clean and dry at assembly. Apply small amount of oil on the contacting surfaces of the metal seals just prior to assembly. Do not put oil on the toric rings or the ramps. The seal rings must be assembled square to the bore and the toric must not be bulged or twisted.
4. Install the 6V1882 Cone on the spindle and the 8E4932 Cone on the existing hub. Lubricate the cones lightly on assembly with the lubricant being sealed and use a feeler gauge to verify that the 8E4932 Cone is fully seated on the hub.
5. Install the wheel and hub assemblies on the spindle.
6. Measure the thickness of the 2V7092 Plate at three places next to each of the three small holes. Average these three measurements - Dimension A.
NOTE: 2V7092 Plate will need to be machined sufficiently on the outer face to provide a flat surface for locating a depth micrometer.
7. Install the 2V7092 Plate with three bolts placed next to the three small holes. Do not install any shims at this time.
8. Tighten the three bolts to 100 N·m (75 lb ft), then rotate the wheel through several revolutions. Tighten the bolts again to 100 N·m (75 lb ft) and rotate the wheel through several revolutions again. Continue this tightening and turning sequence until the bolt torque is maintained at 100 N·m (75 lb ft).
9. Loosen the three bolts, then tighten them to 25 N·m (18 lb ft). Rotate the wheel through several revolutions. Tighten the bolts again to 25 N·m (18 lb ft) and rotate the wheel through several revolutions again. Continue this tightening and turning sequence until the bolt torque in maintained at 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
10. Use a depth micrometer to measure the distance to the end of the spindle through the three small holes. Average these three measurements - Dimension B.
11. Remove the 2V7092 Plate and install a shim pack with the thickness equal to Dimension B minus Dimension A plus 0.10 mm (.004").
12. Install the plate with all eight bolts and tighten the bolts to 130 to 170 N·m (96 to 126 lb ft).
NOTE: Lubricate all seals with axle oil during assembly.
NOTE: Tighten twenty 1A1135 Bolts holding carrier to the wheel to 245 to 295 N·m (180 to 220 lb ft).
NOTE: Tighten thirty-two OS1625 Bolts holding brake drum to the wheel to 260 to 280 N·m (190 to 205 lb ft).
