Problem
The poppet in the transmission filter bypass valve may fail on certain Challenger 65 and Challenger 75 Tractors. If the poppet fails by breaking up, damage to the transmission control valve can result. This damage and/or the particles resulting from the break up may allow the machine to move unexpectedly.

Action Required
Parts Stock
Remove all 9T7038 Filter Groups from parts stock. The elements with those groups are usable.
Affected Product Before Failure
Replace 9T7038 Filter Groups with 6E5596 Filter Groups. Use a new 2S4078 Seal on each connecting line.
Check the poppet in all removed filter bases for breakage of the rim that centers the spring. Inspect visually, using a light. Look into the removed filter base line port that has the spring in it. The raised rim around the spring that centers it must be intact. If it is found to be intact, no further action is required. If damaged, refer to the after failure instructions.
Affected Product After Failure
If unexpected motion has occurred, try to verify it. The most frequently encountered symptom of poppet particles in the valves is transmission engagement with the control lever in neutral. However there can be other causes of that. Therefore a check of mechanical conditions is required for accurate diagnosis. Even if motion cannot be verified, check and correct the cable and reverse lock adjustments as described in the Service Manual. Be sure the screws securing the 3W4571 Guide are tight and the guide is not excessively worn. Given those adjustments, if no unexpected motion can be produced, no further action is required.
If unexpected machine motion can be produced, it will be necessary to remove control valves for complete disassembly and cleaning. Clean the pressure control group, the selector group, the manual modulation valve, and the rotary actuator. Clean all orifices, screens, bores, and passages. Remove the vane from the rotary actuator for cleaning of its passages.
