Note: Measurements to be taken before disassembly

Rotate the pinion to the correct position as shown in Illustration 1. While the pinion is in the "loaded" position, check for load and backlash.

Pinion Float

Place a dial indicator on the external face of the pinion bearing housing with the indicator plunger on the face of the pinion.

Note: Dial indicator placement is easiest from the offput side.

Measure and record the total travel distance of the pinion.

Place a dial indicator on the outside of the power frame with the indicator plunger on the face of the bull gear. Measure the total travel distance of the crankshaft.

Crosshead Guide Tube Measurement

Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the crosshead and guide tube.

Note: Measure along the top half of the crosshead.

Total maximum clearance on diameter is 1.143 mm (0.045 inch). The maximum clearance per side is 0.584 mm (0.023 inch).

New pump tolerance per side is 0.279 mm to 0.381 mm (0.011 inch to 0.015 inch).

Main Roller Bearing Clearance

Use a feeler gauge to measure the clearance between the roller bearings and the outer race.

Note: Measure along the top half of the bearings.
