C15 (S/N: SDP1-UP)

Introduction

Do not perform any procedure in this publication until you understand the information that is contained in this publication.

This procedure must be completed when any fuel line for the ARD combustion head is loosened.

This procedure checks for leaks in the fuel lines for the ARD combustion head.

Procedure

An override is available on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) for activating the ARD purge air pump. Approximately 40 seconds are required for the pump to create full pressure after the override is turned on. The following list describes the sequence of operation.

  • The override is enabled.

  • If the pump is not operating, the pump operates at low speed for 20 seconds.

  • Then, the pump begins operation at high speed.

  • Approximately 20 seconds of high speed operation are required in order for the pump to build maximum pressure.

  • The pump operates at high speed for four minutes. Then, the pump changes to low speed operation.

Illustrations 1 and 2 describe the activation of the override.

Change the "Aftertreatment Regeneration Device Purge Air Actuator Override" to "On".

  1. Establish communication between Cat ET and the ECM.

  1. Enable the ARD purge air pump override with the engine that is not running.

  1. Touch the pump or listen to the pump in order to determine if the pump is running.

If the pump is not making any noise, there may be a problem with the pump. Refer to Troubleshooting, "ARD Purge Air-Test" in order to troubleshoot the pump.

Note: The following procedure must be performed between 40 seconds and four minutes once the override is activated. The ARD purge air pump is operating at high speed during this time.

  1. Spray soap and water solution to the ARD combustion head specifically at the fuel lines that are shown in Illustration 3.

  1. Spray soap and water solution to the manifold for the lines to the ARD combustion head that are shown in Illustration 4 and Illustration 5.

  1. Perform a visual check for bubbles that are forming at the fittings of the fuel lines.

  1. If bubbles do not form, there are no fuel leaks and this test is complete. If bubbles are present, disable the ARD purge air pump and troubleshoot the leaking fuel line.

  1. Ensure that the proper torque is used when you are installing the fuel lines to the ARD combustion head.
