Electronic actuators have been returned to Caterpillar for communication failures at low hours but no fault has been found. Typically, a -9 diagnostic code (communication failure) is caused by a poor electrical connection. Check the electrical connections between the Electronic Control Module (ECM) and the actuator for the following problems:
- Corrosion or moisture on the wiring
- Harness damage that is caused by chafing
- Harness damage that is caused by excessive heat
Verify that each wire is connected to the correct terminal on each connector. Perform a pull test on each wire that is associated with the actuator. Ensure that each connector is completely tight and seated properly. Refer to the appropriate troubleshooting procedure for additional information.
