Cylinder Heads

Usage:

3408C

(1) Large bolts (3/4 in). Put 6V4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant on the threads of all bolts, and between the washer and underside of bolt head and tighten the bolts in the step sequence that follows:

1. Tighten bolts from 1 to 14 in number sequence to ... 280 ± 27 N·m (210 ± 20 lb ft)

2. Tighten bolts from 1 to 14 in number sequence to ... 440 ± 20 N·m (325 ± 15 lb ft)

3. Tighten bolts from 1 to 14 in number sequence again to ... 440 ± 20 N·m (325 ± 15 lb ft)

4. Install the rocker arms for the engine valves and the remaining (3/4 in) bolts. Put 6V4876 Molykote Paste Lubricant on the threads of all bolts, and between the washer and underside of bolt head and tighten the bolts in the step sequence that follows.

5. Tighten bolts from 15 to 18 in number sequence to ... 280 ± 27 N·m (210 ± 20 lb ft)

6. Tighten bolts from 15 to 18 in number sequence to ... 440 ± 20 N·m (325 ± 15 lb ft)

7. Tighten bolts from 15 to 18 in number sequence again to ... 440 ± 20 N·m (325 ± 15 lb ft)


Typical Example

(2) Small bolts (3/8 in). Put clean engine oil on the bolt threads and use the following tightening procedure.

Four bolts marked X:

a. Tighten bolts marked X finger tight.

b. Tighten timing gear housing to bracket bolts to standard torque.

c. Tighten bolts marked X to ... 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft)

Bolts marked Y and Z:

a. Tighten bolts marked Z finger tight.

b. Tighten bolts marked Y to standard torque.

c. Tighten bolts marked Z to ... 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft)

Tighten the remaining (3/8 in) bolts (2) to ... 45 ± 7 N·m (33 ± 5 lb ft)

(3) Torque for eight exhaust manifold studs in each cylinder head ... 35 ± 5 N·m (26 ± 4 lb ft)

(4) Height of cylinder head (new) ... 112.78 ± 0.25 mm (4.440 ± .010 in)

Minimum permissible thickness of cylinder head ... 111.51 mm (4.390 in)
