Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
NOTICE |
---|
Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. |
Note: Piston Packs are designed to be installed in an engine that has STANDARD cylinder bores only.
This Special Instruction assumes that the following conditions exist:
- The cylinder bores have been checked.
- The cylinder bores are standard size.
- The cylinder bores meet Caterpillar reusability guidelines.
Refer to the appropriate Disassembly and Assembly for additional information.
Use the following procedure to install the Piston Packs:
- Remove the Piston Pack from the box.
Note: Save the box and the packaging material for the return shipment of the Piston Pack.
- Apply a thin layer of clean engine oil to the inside of the cylinder. Carefully place the Piston Pack into the cylinder bore, until the installation ring (1) contacts the engine block (2) .
Note: One piece pistons are stamped with the word "FRONT" on the crown of the piston. Make sure that the word "FRONT" is facing the front of the engine when the piston is installed. The front of the engine is opposite the flywheel end. The two-piece pistons are not stamped with the word "FRONT" since orientation is not necessary.

- Line up the connecting rod and the crankshaft. Push the Piston Pack into the cylinder bore until the piston is in the block and the installation ring is free of the piston.
- Place installation ring (1) over the old Piston Pack so that the ring fits around the skirt of the piston and rests on the bottom of oil ring (3) .
Place the old Piston Pack and the installation ring back into the original box.
