Engine Overspeeds on Start

Probable Causes

  • Problem with the fuel injection control linkage

  • Problem with the governor

Recommended Repairs

Problem With the Fuel Injection Control Linkage

Inspect the fuel injection control linkage. Look for the following conditions:

  • Improper assembly after overhaul

  • Linkage that is binding

  • Linkage that is stuck in the Fuel ON position

  • Governor output shaft that is disconnected from the fuel injection control linkage

Refer to Troubleshooting, "Fuel Injection Control Linkage" for further information. Make repairs or replace components, if necessary.

Problem With the Governor

If a problem with the governor is suspected, refer to Troubleshooting, "Governor Instability". If the problem can not be resolved, remove the governor and bench test the governor. If the governor can not be adjusted properly during the bench test, repair the governor or replace the governor. Bench test the repaired governor. If the governor must be replaced, bench test the new governor. Refer to Service Manual, SENR6454, "3114, 3116 & 3126 Engine Governors".
