Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

Intake lobe spalling has been observed on current production camshafts on certain C175 engines.

Solution

Caterpillar® is aware of this problem, but a permanent repair has not been identified. As an interim action, C175 camshafts have been reworked by the supplier, and have been inspected for the surface finish requirement.

The reworked camshafts have an "R" stamped under the serial number as shown in Illustration 1. Any C175 camshaft that has the "R" stamped under the serial number is acceptable to be used.

The affected part numbers are listed in Table 1.
