Exhaust Bypass Valve (Wastegate) Rod End Damage Caterpillar

Exhaust Bypass Valve (Wastegate) Rod End Damage

Usage:

ENGINESG3606 (3XF),
G3608 (4WF),
G3612 (1YG),
G3616 (4CG) ENGINES

Problem:

The small "U" shaped slot in the soft wrap exhaust manifold insulation does not provide adequate protection to prevent heat damage to the wastegate control rod. The "U" shaped slot is allowing excessive heat from the exhaust manifold to cause the upper control rod end to seize. This seizure can occur within 1 hour after starting the engine.

Solution:

An interim fix is to provide additional protection around the wastegate rod by installing a small sheet metal shield between the soft wrap insulation and the rod end. When installing the shield, BE SURE there is adequate operating clearance for the rod. The shield will help prevent a rod end seizure by reducing the amount of heat reaching the rod end. A permanent fix is being worked on, and will be released when identified.
