Operator Controls (1) Joystick (2 ) Keypad |
The primary operator control modules are located in the cab.
The first two primary operator input modules include joystick (1) and keypad (2). These devices are located within easy reach of the operator, generally forward of the operator right arm rest. The joystick and keypad give the operator control of primary WDS functions.
In this example installation, keypad (2) is located to the rear of joystick (1). The keypad and joystick modules communicate with the system via CAN data lines.
Joystick (1) incorporates buttons, a slider switch, and trigger. The trigger is multi-function, activating both oncoming traffic and water cannon functions.

Forward of Operator (777G) (3) Display module |
The third operator input device is display module (3). In this 777G installation, the display is located forward of the operator.
Display module (3) includes both a display screen and input keys. The display is placed for convenient viewing and operator inputs.
Display module (3) is the CAN system master. The display receives data from and sends data to the other modules in order to control the system. All processing and operator visual interface is through the display.

Keypad (4) Tank-fill key (5) Cannon key (6) Intermittent spray key (7) Number keys (8) Water pump key (9) Plus and minus keys (10) Manual mode key (11) Head clean key (12) AUX key |
Keypad (2) is an input module to the display in the CAN system. The keypad transmits operator inputs in order to select basic operational functions during machine use. The keypad contains indicator lights to indicate active selection. The keypad functions are selected with the following keys:
- Tank-Fill Key (4) - When this key is pressed, a screen appears displaying the level of water in the tank as a percentage. This key can be connected to a transmitter that opens and closes a valve in order to fill the water tank. The tank fill key can also send a signal in order to close the valve when the tank is full. The tank fill levels are calibrated in the "Tank Properties" adjust group.
Note: When the tank fill key is activated, the display enables keys "F1" (start) and "F4" (stop) in order to allow control of water tank filling.
- Cannon Key (5) - This key enables water cannon control. The cannon may be directed with the joystick when the truck is running and the cannon key is pressed. The cannon can be enabled simultaneously with spray heads in manual mode. The cannon does not have pressurized water available unless the water pump is also enabled.
- Intermittent Spray Key (6) - This key places the water delivery system in the intermittent mode. This mode provides adjustable on and off times as well as spray distance in feet or meters. The on and off times are changed in an adjust group. The intermittent function is used with programmed configurations or manual mode.
- Number Keys (7) - Keys "1" through "7" are dual-function. When in automatic modes the number keys select programmed automatic configurations. When in manual modes, the number keys are used in order to select specific spray heads.
- Water Pump Key (8) - The water pump is enabled or disabled with each press. The water pump will not activate unless an operation that requires water is also on. Examples are the cannon mode, manual mode, head clean, or programmed configuration. The water pump will not engage in a programmed configuration until the vehicle reaches a pre-determined forward speed. The water pump will engage at any time when enabled in the manual mode.
- Plus and Minus Keys (9) - These keys are used in order to adjust the water pressure and flow. The adjustment amount is indicated with sliding gauge on the display screen. The default value is in the middle of the gauge scale. The value can double by moving the pointer to the top of the scale. The valve can reduce by half, by moving the pointer from the middle to the bottom of the scale.
- Manual Mode Key (10) - The water system is operated in a manual mode with this key. With the manual mode activated, the numbered keys will activate the spray head with that number as seen on the display. The spray heads will open and water gravity-feeds out until the pump is enabled. The default opening is
6 mm (0.236 inch) . The default opening can be adjusted.
Note: Manual mode is functional when stationary, in reverse, and in forward up to a pre-set ground speed. Above the pre-set speed manual mode is disabled and spray configurations must be used.
- Head Clean Key (11) - Head clean mode is activated with this key. When a numbered key is pressed after the head clean mode is activated, the selected head opens to the maximum position. The head will gravity-feed to flush debris unless the pump is also activated in order to pressure-clean one or more heads.
- AUX Key (12) - Function varies by model. In most installations, this key opens the dump bar valve or tank drain valve, and water feeds by gravity. If the dump bar is plumbed through the water pump, activating the water pump will pressurize the dump bar.

Right Console (13) Trigger (14) Slide (15) Buttons (16) Dust boot (17) Base |
Joystick (1) is an input module to the display in the CAN system. A standard joystick and an optional joystick are available.
The joystick transmits operator inputs in order to control the water cannon and secondary features. The joystick features include finger-actuated trigger (13), thumb slide 14, and two thumb buttons (15) mounted on the top. Inside protective dust boot (16), base (17) of the joystick pivots for cannon directional input.
Trigger (13) toggles on or off with each press in order to open the cannon butterfly valve when in cannon mode. This action allows water to flow through the valve to the cannon. However, the cannon does not spray unless water pump key (4) is enabled on keypad (2).
Trigger (13) can also activate the oncoming traffic function. This function is used to turn off selected heads when the system is operating in a programmed configuration mode. The oncoming traffic function is enabled when manual and programmed configurations are in use. Oncoming traffic spray head selection is made in the "Oncoming Traffic" submenu of the "Main" menu.
Pressing and releasing the trigger once turns only the selected spray heads off. A second actuation of the trigger will turn the heads back on. The oncoming traffic function will not be enabled when the cannon mode is selected.
Buttons (15) on joystick (1) are used with the optional additive system. These buttons add secondary liquids into the cannon water stream. The additive system is used to add fluids such as soaps and foams.
Base (17) of joystick (1) allows the operator to aim the cannon when cannon key (6) is enabled on keypad (2).
Left or right movement of the joystick will move the cannon left or right. Forward will move the cannon nozzle up. Pulling the joystick back will move the cannon nozzle downward. Slight movement of the joystick yields slow cannon movement. Large movement provides fast cannon movement.
Slide (14) is used to vary the spray pattern of the cannon if the cannon is equipped with the adjustable volute orifice.

Display Module Components (19) Screen (20) Arrow keys (21) "OK" key (22) Menu key (23) Return key (24) "F" keys |
Display module (3) is the master module in the CAN system. This module performs all calculations for system control. The display consists of an MD3 interactive monitor. The operator uses this module to monitor the operating system, retrieve data and select options before and during machine use. The display layout and input devices are:
- Screen (19) - The display screen displays data information or the current location in the navigation of menus and submenus.
- Arrow Keys (20) - The arrow keys are used to navigate through menus, submenus, and lists.
- "OK" Key (21) - This key selects highlighted items, acknowledges prompts, and confirms input. The "OK" key also allows the operator to save a change mode in a field that can be changed.
- Menu Key (22) - This key has multiple uses. The menu key primarily returns the system to the "Main" menu display. The menu key can also lead to submenus "Adjust", "Measure", "Info" and "Preferences".
- Return Key (23) - This key returns the current submenu or function page to the previous page. The return key can also allow return to the truck screen when in a mode selection.
- "F" Keys (24) - The function keys select the option that is shown on the display directly above each key as available.
