The Caterpillar Water Delivery System (WDS) is an attachment system installed on the following machines: 777F Off-Highway Truck, 777G Off-Highway Truck and 785D Off-Highway Truck. The WDS system is designed to distribute water through the spray heads and water, soap, and foam through the cannon. The liquid is distributed in an even and regulated manner with automatic or manual flow control at varying speeds and engine rpm.
The WDS can be used for various purposes. Examples include:
- Dust control
- Aggregate preparation
- Firefighting
- Ramp and equipment wash-down
This section describes the basic functional operation of the WDS.
The WDS system is comprised of electronic, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, and software components. This section describes the primary components of the system and relationships to other components.

The control system components are distributed in various locations on the vehicle.
The Caterpillar WDS uses a Controller Area Network (CAN) of input modules (4), display module (2) and three XA2 control modules (3). The components may vary by options and installation. The modules and components communicate with each other in order to accomplish tasks requested by the operator within design and functional limitations.
Display module (2) is the CAN master and central data processor. The display receives input directly from the operator through the incorporated buttons, joystick, and keypad using J1939 communication specifications. The display module uses three XA2 modules (3) to interface with WDS hardware components including sensors and solenoids. The display also receives CAN truck data (1) input directly from the vehicle ECM, or through an A4M1 CAN translator module in the 785D model.
IQAN software is used in order to access display module (2) for service and firmware flash-programming purposes. Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) is used to program the A4M1 CAN translator module, if equipped.
The control system defines the operation of each specific device. The assigned wire colors and numbers can be traced to specific components using the electrical schematic.
