Personal injury or death can result if spilled fuel ignites. Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel spills immediately. |

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Do not fill fuel filters with fuel before installing them. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts. The fuel system should be primed prior to starting the engine. |

- In order to drain the primary fuel filter, open drain valve (3) on water separator bowl (2). The water separator bowl is under primary fuel filter (1). Catch the fuel in a suitable container.
- Remove primary fuel filter (1) and water separator bowl (2).
- Clean the filter housing base.
- Remove and replace the O-ring seal on the filter housing base. Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel.
- Remove the water separator bowl from the primary fuel filter. Discard the O-ring seal.
Note: Check the water separator bowl for damage. Reuse the water separator bowl if no damage is present.
- Clean the water separator bowl and clean the groove for the O-ring seal. Wash the water separator bowl in a clean nonflammable solvent. Use pressure air to dry the water separator bowl.
- Lubricate the O-ring seal with clean diesel fuel. Place the O-ring seal in the groove on the water separator bowl.
- Install the clean water separator bowl onto a new filter by hand.
- Apply clean diesel fuel to the seal of the new filter.
- Install the new filter hand tight until the seal of the filter contacts the filter mounting base. Note the position of the index marks on the filter in relation to a fixed point on the filter mounting base.
Note: There are rotation index marks on the filter that are spaced 90 degrees or 1/4 of a turn away from each other. When you tighten the filter, use the rotation index marks as a guide.
- Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter. Use the index marks as a guide for tightening the filter. For non-Caterpillar filters, use the instructions that are provided with the filter.
Note: A Caterpillar strap wrench, or another suitable tool maybe required in order to turn the filter to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.
- Prime the fuel system. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime".
Note: The secondary fuel filter should also be changed at this time. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System Secondary Filter - Replace".
- Start the engine and check for leaks. Make any necessary repairs.
