Important Information
Read this entire manual and all other publications pertaining to the work to be performed before installing, operating, or servicing this equipment. Practice all plant and safety instructions and precautions. Failure to follow instructions can cause personal injury and/or property damage. The engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover should be equipped with an overspeed (overtemperature, or overpressure, where applicable) shutdown device(s), that operates totally independently of the prime mover control device(s) to protect against runaway or damage to the engine, turbine, or other type of prime mover with possible personal injury or loss of life should the mechanical-hydraulic governor(s) or electric control(s), the actuator(s), fuel control(s), the driving mechanism(s), the linkage(s), or the controlled device(s) fail. |
NOTICE |
---|
To prevent damage to a control system that uses an alternator or battery-charging device, make sure the charging device is turned off before disconnecting the battery from the system. |
NOTICE |

Introduction
This manual describes the Woodward 705 Digital Speed Control, model 9906-106.
Application
The 705 Digital Speed Control controls the speed of mechanical-drive reciprocating engines. Control functions include:
- * adjustable start fuel limiting;
- * user-optional input from a 4-20 mA/1-5 Vdc turbo boost pressure transmitter for fuel rack limiting;
- * 4-20 mA/1-5 Vdc input for remote speed reference;
- * user-optional torque limiting based on engine speed;
- * adjustable acceleration and deceleration times;
- * adjustable low-idle droop;
- * 4-20 mA auxiliary output;
- * self diagnostics on power up.
- * user-optional input from a 4-20 mA/1-5 Vdc turbo boost pressure transmitter for fuel rack limiting;
The 705 control system includes:
- * a 705 Digital Speed Control;
- * an external 24 Vdc power source;
- * a speed-sensing device;
- * a proportional actuator to position the fuel rack;
- * a terminal for adjusting control parameters;
- * an optional 4-20 mA/1-5 Vdc transmitter for remote speed reference;
- * an optional 4-20 mA/1-5 Vdc output turbo boost pressure-sensing device.
- * an external 24 Vdc power source;
The 705 control (Figure 1-1) consists of a single printed circuit board in a sheet-metal chassis. All inputs and outputs connect to two terminal strips and a 9-pin subminiature "D" connector.
705 Digital Speed Control Accessories
Set Point Programmer (Figure 1-2), part number 8280-107, is used for adjusting the 705 control. It plugs into the serial port of the 705 control.
