Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
Introduction
The relief valve (torque converter outlet) maintains a minimum oil pressure in the torque converter.
The following test procedure will verify whether the pressure setting is within the specified limits. The pressure setting may be adjusted by adding or removing shims.

Test and Adjust
- Move the machine to a smooth horizontal location.
- Extend the counterweight fully. Engage the parking brake. Turn the engine OFF.
- Place the counterweight lock lever in the LOCK position.

The pressure tap for the torque converter outlet relief valve is located behind the access door on the right fender of the machine. |
- Attach tooling (A or B) to pressure tap (N) .

- Start the engine. Warm the power train oil to a temperature of 80° ± 10°C (176° ± 18°F).
- Make sure that the transmission is in NEUTRAL.
- Engage the service brake.
- Disengage the parking brake.
- Upshift the transmission to THIRD SPEED FORWARD.
- Operate the engine at HIGH IDLE.
- Check the pressure at THIRD SPEED FORWARD STALL. The pressure at tooling (A or B) should be 415 ± 70 kPa (60 ± 10 psi).
- If the pressure at tooling (A or B) is not within the specified limits, perform the following adjustment procedure.
ReferenceSee Testing and Adjusting, "Pressure Charts" in this module for additional pressure values.
Adjustment Procedure
- Remove the floorplate in order to access the torque converter outlet relief valve from the top.
- Install 5M-9623 Spacers (2) or remove spacers in order to change the pressure setting of the torque converter outlet relief valve (1) .
Note: One spacer changes the pressure setting by 16.5 kPa (2.4 psi). Adding spacers increases the pressure and removing spacers lowers the pressure.
