Timing Gears

Usage:

Remove Timing Gears

start by:

a) remove flywheel housing

b) remove rocker shaft assembly and push rods

1. Remove the seal ring from the groove of thrower (1).

2. Install tooling (A) on thrower (1). Heat thrower with a torch while pulling on the thrower with tooling (A). Remove the thrower from crankshaft.

3. Remove retainer plate (2) and camshaft idler gear (4).

4. Remove accessory drive gear (3) and camshaft drive gear (5) with tooling (B).

5. Remove retainer plate (6) and idler gear (7) for water pump.

6. Remove thrust washer (9) and cluster gear (8).

7. Remove bearing cage (10) from cylinder block.

8. Remove the bearing for cluster gear shaft with tool group (C).

9. Remove bearings from camshaft idler gear (11) with tooling (D).

10. Remove bearings from idler gear for water pump with tooling (E).

11. Remove bearings from bearing cage with tooling (F).

Install Timing Gears

1. Install the bearings in camshaft idler gear with tooling (A).

2. Install the bearings in idler gear for water pump with tooling (B).

3. Install the bearings in bearing cage with tooling (C).

4. Install bearing in cylinder block for cluster gear shaft with tool group (D).

5. Turn crankshaft until the timing mark on gear tooth is in alignment with timing mark on cluster gear.

6. Install bearing cage (1) and cluster gear (2). Be sure "F" mark (3) on cluster gear is in alignment with "F" mark (4) on crankshaft gear.

7. Install idler gear (5) for water pump and retaining plate (6) and bolts.

8. Heat camshaft drive gear (8) and accessory drive gear (7) to a temperature of 300°F (149°C). Install the gears (8) and (7), locks, and nuts on their respective shafts.

9. After the gears are cold, tighten nut (9) on camshaft to 300 ± 25 lb. ft. (410 ± 35 N·m). Tighten nut on accessory drive shaft to 325 ± 25 lb. ft. (440 ± 35 N·m).

10. Install timing pin (10) in camshaft for fuel injection pump.

11. Install a bolt (12) in timing gear housing between gear teeth of camshaft gear (11) that have a "V" mark.

12. Install idler gear (13) and retaining plate.

NOTICE

Before idler gear (13) is installed, "F" marks on cluster and crankshaft must be in alignment. Timing pin must be in injection pump camshaft. Bolt must be between gear teeth of camshaft gear that have a "V" mark.

end by:

a) install flywheel housing

b) install crankshaft rear seal

c) install rocker shaft assembly and push rods
