Check Journal Hardness On Reground Crankshafts

Usage:

All Engines

During a crankshaft bearing failure, the crankshaft becomes very hot. This heat can change the hardness of the surface of crankshaft journals.

If the hardness is not in the specifications range and the crankshaft is reground to be used again, a failure is possible.

When a crankshaft is reground after a bearing failure, remember ...

... Grind the damaged journals first.
... Check the hardness of the damaged journal.
... Grind the other journals and check their hardness.
... With the crankshaft in the same position it is in when the engine is at top dead center, check the hardness of the journals in two places, on their top and bottom.
... The hardness of the main journals also must be checked in two places 180° apart.

See the "Guidelines For Reusable Parts - Crankshaft Measurement" SEBF8041 for the correct procedures and specifications.
