Required Tools
Tool  Part Number  Part Description  Qty
A  5P-3540  Locknut Wrench
B  1P-1861  Internal Retaining Ring Pliers

Start By:

  1. Remove the front slack adjuster or remove the rear slack adjuster. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Slack Adjuster (Front) - Remove" or Disassembly and Assembly, "Slack Adjuster (Rear) - Remove".

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the disassembly procedure, the exterior of the component should be thoroughly cleaned. This will help to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Note: The disassembly procedure is identical for both the slack adjuster for the front brakes and for the slack adjuster for the rear brakes.

Note: The disassembly procedure is identical for both the right side of the slack adjuster and the left side of the slack adjuster. For simplicity, the disassembly procedure for only one side of the slack adjuster is shown. Repeat this procedure for disassembly of the opposite side of the slack adjuster.

  1. If necessary, remove three fittings (2) from slack adjuster (1) and housing (3).

    ------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from being struck by parts propelled by a released spring force.

Make sure to wear all necessary protective equipment.

Follow the recommended procedure and use all recommended tooling to release the spring force.

Note: Housing (3) is fastened to base (4) under spring force. Retain housing (3) by hand while you are slowly removing the housing from base (4).

  2. Position the slack adjuster in a soft jawed vise, as shown. Use Tool (A) to remove housing (3) from base (4).

  7. Remove piston (10) from piston housing (7). Remove spring (12) and spring (13). Remove O-ring seal (11) and two O-ring seals from piston (10).

  8. Repeat Step 2 through Step 7 for the remaining side of the slack adjuster.
