Problem:
The transmission control may log a service code of MID 081, CID 638, FMI 05, (Current Below Normal to the Starter Relay Coil) when the starter motor is energized. This fault is most likely to occur when the battery voltage dips during cold weather cranking or during extended cranking. This problem appears as a logged fault (not an active fault) and no operational problems are observed with the starter relay.
Solution:
The long term solution to this problem will be a software change to modify the voltage level at which a fault is logged by the transmission control. The availability of this fix will be announced at a later date in a Service Magazine article.
Until the software change is available, refer to Service Manual module, SENR5890, Electronic Transmission Control System, for instructions on using the Caterpillar Monitoring System to Determine Service Codes. If the "Fault Present" indicator is off, then the fault that caused the service code to be logged is no longer present and the service code should be cleared.
