Usage:
You must read and understand the warnings and instructions contained in the Safety section of this manual before performing any operation or maintenance procedures.
Transfer Drive
Change Oil
- 1. Park the machine on level ground.
- 2. Remove filler plug (1) and drain plug (2). Allow oil to drain into a suitable container.
- 3. Clean and install the drain plug (2).
- 4. Add new oil to the level of the filler hole.
- 5. Clean and install the filler plug (1).
Accumulator(s)
Check Precharge, Adjust if Necessary
All machines have a front suspension accumulator.
D40D machines have two rear suspension accumulators.
Refer to the Service Manual or your Caterpillar dealer for correct precharge checking and adjusting procedures.
Transmission
Change Oil, Clean Strainer
NOTICE |
---|
Be careful not to drop or otherwise jar the magnets. |
Warm the oil before draining the transmission.
- 1. With the oil warm, remove the drain plug (1) and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
- 2. Clean and install the drain plug.
- 3. Remove the magnetic strainer cover (2).
- 4. Pull out the screen (3) and magnets (4).
- 5. Wash the screen and magnets in clean, nonflammable solvent and further clean the magnets with a cloth or stiff brush.
- 6. Install the screen, magnets and cover using a new seal if necessary. Ensure that the spring washer is in place.
- 7. Fill the transmission with new oil to the FULL mark on the dipstick.
- 8. Start the engine and operate at low idle for two minutes.
- 9. Add oil if necessary to the FULL mark on the dipstick.
Axles
Change Oil
- 1. Position the machine on level ground so that one of the front axle final drive level plugs (1) is at its lowest point.
- 2. Remove the plug (1) and drain the oil into a suitable container.
- 3. Clean and install the plug.
- 4. Move the machine very slowly until the opposite final drive level plug is at its lowest point.
- 5. Remove the plug and drain the oil into a suitable container.
- 6. Clean and install the plug.
- 7. Lower the suspension to the service position. See the topic "Suspension Lowering".
- 8. Remove the front differential drain plug (2) and drain oil into a suitable container.
- 9. Clean and install the plug.
- 10. Start the engine, disengage differential lock and allow the front suspension to self level.
- 11. Move the machine slightly until one of the front final drive level plugs (1) is on the horizontal center line of the machine.
- 12. Engage the parking brake and shut down the engine.
- 13. Remove the plug (1) and add oil to the level of the hole.
- 14. Speed filling by removing the axle housing plug (3) and adding new oil through the hole.
- 15. Install the plugs (1) and (3).
The procedure described previously is for the front axle.
The procedure for the rear axle on D40D machines is the same except that oil can be added through filler hole (4) in the final drive cover.
Use the same procedure for the center axle on D400D machines but ignore step 7.
For D400D rear axles, use the same procedure but note that the oil level mark is higher.
- 16. Speed filling by removing the axle housing plug and adding new oil through the plug.
Use plug (5) on D40D rear axle / D400D center axle housing and plug (6) on D400D rear axle housing.
After changing the oil in the axles, operate the machine for a few minutes and check the oil levels.
Steering
Change Filter
The steering pilot lines filter is mounted on the rear of the cab.
- 1. Unscrew the housing (1)
- 2. Remove and discard the old element (2) and seal (3).
- 3. Clean the filter housing base.
- 4. Inspect the filter housing seal (4). If it is damaged replace with new one.
- 5. Apply a thin film of clean oil to the seals.
- 6. Install the new element (2) and seal (3).
- 7. Install the filter housing (1) by hand. When the seal (4) contacts the base, tighten the filter housing by a 3/4 turn more.
- 8. Start the engine and check for leaks from the filter housing. Tighten the housing a little more if necessary.
- 9. Clean up any oil spils.
