PROBLEM

The engine water pumps need to be inspected on certain D11R Tractors; 776D Tractors; 777D and 793C Trucks; 992G Wheel Loaders; and 3508, 3508B, G3508, 3512, 3512B, G3512, 3516, 3516B, G3516, G3524, and G3532 Engines. Water pumps that do not have a "W" stamped on the pump to indicate that they have been reworked previously need to be disassembled to clean the taper where the impeller mounts. If the taper is not properly cleaned before tightening the nut the impeller can turn on the shaft and result in overheating.

***** Affected Product/Spare Engines *****

Note: Check the curved outlet portion of the pump for a 'W' stamp in the casting. This would indicate that the rework has already been performed.

Note: Do not use air tools to remove or install the pump impeller or nut. The porcelain seal maybe damage as a result.

  1. Drain the coolant out of the engine. (If required)
  2. Remove the elbow on the front of the water pump.
  3. Remove the 3 nuts on the adapter at the front of the pump.
  4. Remove the impeller shaft self locking nut and washer.
  5. With a puller, carefully extract the impeller out of the pump shaft
  6. Clean the bore of the impeller and the shaft taper with an oil removing solution.
  7. Carefully reinstall the impeller and new self locking nut on the pump shaft.
  8. Torque the impeller nut to 200Nm. Then back off the nut and re-torque nut to 225Nm.
  9. NOTE: Certain engines may require significant amount of piping and bracket removal to gain access to the water pump. A maximum of 2 additional hours is allowed to be claimed with a claim story submitted.

  10. Lubricate the 'O ' ring on the front adapter before installation.
  11. Installed the 3 nuts on the adapter on the front of the pump.
  12. Install the elbow.
  13. Stamp a 'W' marking on the curve outlet portion of the pump.
  14. If the engine is provided with 2 water pumps, repeat the above procedures for the second water pump.
  15. Fill the engine with coolant. (If required)

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

The engine water pumps need to be inspected on the products listed below. Water pumps that do not have a "W" stamped on the pump to indicate that they have been reworked previously need to be disassembled to clean the taper where the impeller mounts. If the taper is not properly cleaned before tightening the nut the impeller can turn on the shaft and result in overheating.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated November 25, 2000 when scheduling this service. You will not be charged for the service performed.

We regret the inconvenience this may cause you, but urge you to have this service performed as soon as possible to prevent unscheduled downtime.
