August 2002 MACHINE - EMISSIONS RETROFIT ENGINES Announcement Caterpillar announces the addition of Caterpillar? Retrofit Engines for emissions reduction in selected Caterpillar machines. These retrofit engines are new or reman Tier 1 engines to replace pre-Tier 1 engine in the selected machines. Each of these retrofit engines will carry a replacement engine label, plus a special label indicating it meets Tier 1 expected emissions level. Coverage The addition of Caterpillar Emissions Retrofit Engines will provide dealers with opportunity to retrofit unregulated machines with an EPA Tier 1 level emission engine. The Machine Application, Original Engine Arrangement, New Emissions Engine Arrangement, Additional Installation Parts List part numbers, and Engine Production Dates are shown below. The Additional Installation Parts are available as a paper kit only. All part numbers shown in each specific parts kit will need to be ordered individually. Refer to IRM ENG97-1A (PELE0563) and IRM ENG01-08 (PELE0873) for explanation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tier levels and information on disposition of removed pre-Tier 1 engines. The old engine will need to be given up to the Dealer as part of the transaction. If a remanufactured emissions arrangement is selected, refer to the Core Acceptance and Core Management sections of this publication for additional information on core handling. If a remanufactured engine is used, then the original engine would not need to be given up to the dealer, however sent to Caterpillar Reman Core Processing Group via the Caterpillar dealership. Additional machine applications for retrofit engines are being developed. New applications will be added to the following website when available https://engines.cat.com/infocast/frames/systems/retrofit/application/mach/ . If you need assistance with an emission retrofit application not listed on the website, contact the Caterpillar Emissions Retrofit group at (309) 578-8722 or fax your application needs and information to (309) 578-7152, Attn: Emissions Retrofit Group.
Note: Features And Benefits Caterpillar Retrofit Engines are manufactured as complete as possible, including the correct engine control software, to reduce installation time. Caterpillar has researched each application to assure the retrofit engines and associated parts list match each specific application. However, dealers will be required to make some modifications to complete the installation. Caterpillar Retrofit Engines are an approved option for machines enrolled in ?Cat? Certified Rebuild? and ?Certified Power Train Rebuild? programs. These new arrangements allow for traceability for future product support requirements. Each retrofit engine arrangement will be added to its respective machine when each machine?s parts book is updated. The following chart shows the NOx emissions improvement for each new arrangement:
Note: This is Caterpillar Inc. best estimate of the emissions for your engine based Caterpillar testing done according to EPA regulation found in 40 CFR Part 89. Installation Refer to the appropriate service manual for basic engine installation. Additional information will be available by each Emission Engine?s production date on the Emissions Retrofit website https://engines.cat.com.infocast/frames/systems/retrofit/application/mach/ Core Acceptance All engines returned as cores must meet the core acceptance guidelines identified in ?Core Acceptance Criteria?, SELD0019, ?Core Inspection Checklist?, SELD0020 and "Core Acceptance Criteria for 3408 and 3412 Engines", SELD0251. Core Management Please refer to the Caterpillar Core Management Information System (CMIS 2) Parts Information application describing all Reman part/CAF and related information. Also refer to other CMIS 2 inquiry applications such as Customer Profiles, Inspection Reason Codes, Inspection Line Inquiry, Add Charge Information, Entitlement Activity, Entitlement Inquiry, CCR Inquiry, CCR Entry, Shipment Processing; Process Packaging Grief; and Reporting to properly manage core returns and monitor inspection performance. This information will be available to all dealers worldwide after your CMIS 2 conversion date. In the meantime, please continue to use the current CMIS Entitlement Parts Inquiry Screen describing the list of parts in a Core Acceptability Family (CAF) and related part number detail.
