Troubleshooting Test Steps | Values | Results |
---|---|---|
1. Active Codes and Logged Codes A. Establish communication between Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing diagnostic trouble codes. Troubleshoot any active codes related to coolant temperature before continuing with this procedure. |
Diagnostic code |
Result: There are no active codes. Proceed to Test Step 2. Result: A diagnostic trouble code is active or logged. Troubleshoot any active or logged codes before continuing with this procedure. |
2. Temperature Sensor and/or the Circuit A. Check the reading of the temperature sensor on Cat ET. The temperature should rise steadily as the engine is warmed. Ensure that the temperature is reasonable. Note: For the 523590-16, refer to “Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) – Test” to check that the aftertreatment temperatures sensors are operating properly. If no issues are found, contact your Caterpillar dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can contact the Dealer Solution Network. Note: For the 523589-17 check that the coolant temperature sensor is operating correctly. |
Coolant Temperature Sensor |
Result: The temperature sensor is working properly. Proceed to Test Step 3. Result: The temperature sensor is not working properly. Repair : Troubleshoot the circuit and the coolant temperature sensor. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Sensor Signal (Analog, Passive) - Test". If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3. |
3. Water Temperature Regulator A. Pressure-test the cooling system. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting for the correct procedure. B. Check that the seating surfaces the radiator cap are clean and undamaged. C. Check operation of the water temperature regulator. Refer to Systems Operation/Testing and Adjusting, "Water Temperature Regulator - Test" |
Temperature Regulator |
Result:The water temperature regulator is operating properly. Proceed to Test Step 4. Result: The water temperature regulator is not operating properly. Repair : Clean the components and/or replace the components. If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4. |
4. Faulty Cooling Fan Use the following Step for Skid Steer Loaders, Multi-Terrain Loader, Compact Track Loaders, and Compact Wheel Loader: A. If the fan motor is not turning, the engine ECM is not controlling the fan. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, UENR2330, "Gear Motor Fan - Test". Use the following Step for Mini-Hydraulic Excavators: B. Check the fan belt tension. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual. |
Cooling Fan |
Result: The cooling fan is operating correctly. Result: The cooling fan is not operating correctly. Repair : Refer to Specifications, UENR2329, "Gear Motor (Fan, Demand)" and Testing and Adjusting, "Gear Motor (Fan) - Test". Result: The cooling fan is not operating correctly. Repair : Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU9004, "Belts - Inspect/Adjust/Replace" |
