Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
Data related to problems and failures of 50MT stator motor cannot be acquired accurately and completely from dealers at non-NACD locations. Moreover, data collection becomes more cost effective due to shipping cost, distance, and language barriers.
Solution
Use the following instructions and examples to attach photos to SIMS entries that will help to identify starter motor problems:
Needed Information
Illustration 1 | g02710356 |
Illustration shows the part number plate and solenoid date code label located on 50MT stator motor |
- Provide picture of part number plate. Part Number is the "Part Causing Failure" entered in SIMS. Also provide clear picture of solenoid date code label so that the solenoid date code is clearly visible. Refer to Illustration 1.
Note: Part Numbers beginning with 10R or 0R are not CAT OEM parts and should be sent back through REMAN process for core credit according to REMAN Policy SELD0040.
Electrical Measurements
Preparation
Remove the following straps prior to take any measurements:
Illustration 2 | g02718596 |
- Remove motor-to-solenoid strap (1) as shown in Illustration 2.
Illustration 3 | g02718619 |
- Remove commutator end cap ground stud (2) as shown in Illustration 3.
Resistance Measurements
Note: Photos are not necessary for resistance measurements.
Illustration 4 | g02717047 |
Illustration 5 | g02717056 |
- Check pull-in and hold-in resistance measurements of the solenoid.
- Measure hold-in resistance between the terminals (3) and record on log sheet as shown in Illustration 4.
- Measure pull-in resistance between the terminals (4) and record on log sheet as shown in Illustration 5.
Note: An example of the log sheet is shown in Illustration 8.

(7) Solenoid contact disc |
- Temporarily remove four bolts on solenoid housing to expose the ends of internal Battery (B+) terminal (5), Motor (M) terminal (6), and solenoid contact disc (7). Provide pictures of the Battery (B+) terminal (5) and Motor (M) terminal (6) as shown in Illustration 6.
- Loosen three internal screws from terminals for separation of solenoid assembly. Provide pictures of solenoid contact disc (7) as shown in Illustration 7.
