The following functions will be performed with an engine that has EMCP II:
- Automatic Start/Stop
- Air shutoff
- Cooldown
The ECM will control these features when an EMCP has not been installed.
Note: If the parameters that are protected with the factory passwords are changed, the Caterpillar warranty may be voided.
System Configuration Parameters
The "Equipment ID" parameter allows the customer to enter a description into the ECM in order to identify the equipment. A maximum of 17 characters can be entered in the field.
The "Engine Serial Number" must be programmed to match the engine serial number that is stamped on the engine information plate. The engine serial number is not preprogrammed on a replacement ECM.
The "Rating Number" is the selected rating within a power rating family. The personality module defines the power rating family and the personality module may contain only one or several ratings. The rating number defines the power rating that is used within the power rating family.
"FLS" is a number that represents the adjustment to the fuel system that was made at the factory in order to fine tune the fuel system. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information ratings plate. Only change this value if the engine is rerated or a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required.
"FTS" is similar to "FLS". Only change this value if the engine is rerated or a new ECM is installed. Factory passwords are required.
Note: The injector codes are not part of the "Configuration" screen on Cat ET. "Injector Codes Calibration" can be found under "Calibrations" in the "Service" menu on Cat ET.
The injector code is a number that is found on each of the unit injectors. The ECM uses this number to compensate for manufacturing variations between individual injectors. If you replace any of the unit injectors, you must reprogram the code for the new injectors. Also, if you replace the ECM, you must reprogram all of the injector codes.
The "Total Tattletale" parameter counts the number of changes to system parameters.
This parameter allows the adjustment of the governor gains. The "Governor Gain" is a parameter that allows one module to be used on a wide variety of generators or other accessories.
"Low Idle Speed" is the minimum allowable operating speed for the engine.
Note: This parameter applies only to the 3406E engine.
When the engine is started, the ECM will limit the engine to low idle. The ECM will no longer limit the engine rpm when the following conditions exist:
- The engine oil pressure is above
70 kPa (10 psi) . - The acceleration delay is reached.
Programming this parameter to zero will disable this function.
Note: If the engine is configured to operate in direct fuel control mode, this parameter is disabled.
"Engine Acceleration Rate" is the maximum ramp rate in order to reach desired engine speed.
This parameter defines the engine rpm during the cooldown period after the Engine Control Switch (ECS) has been set in the OFF/RESET position.
This parameter defines engine operation at the cooldown speed. Programming this parameter to zero will disable this function. This parameter is controlled by the EMCP.
Note: If the system has a EMCP this parameter must be programmed to zero in order for the EMCP to perform this function. Problems may result if both controls try to perform this function.
The crank duration determines when the starting motors will be energized. The crank duration determines when the starting motors will be disengaged. Programming this parameter to zero will prevent the ECM from engaging the starting motors.
"Maximum No. Of Cranking Cycles"
This parameter is the total number of crank cycles that can be performed. This parameter is controlled by the EMCP.
This parameter determines when the starting motor will disengage.
Programming this parameter to "DISABLED" or to OFF will disable the Ether functions. Program this parameter to "DISABLED" or to OFF if the ether function is not being used or if the ether feature is not installed on this engine. Programming the ether control parameter to "DISABLED" or to OFF will prevent diagnostic codes that are associated with the ether control system from being logged.
Programming the parameter to "DISABLED" will disable the air shutoff. This parameter must be programmed to "DISABLED" if the function is not being used or if the air shutoff is not installed on the engine. This will prevent air shutoff diagnostics from being logged.
"Exhaust Temperature Sensor" Installation Status
This parameter is used in order to configure the system with an exhaust temperature sensor. This parameter must be programmed to "Not Installed" if the function is not being used or if the exhaust temperature sensor is not installed on the engine. This will prevent diagnostic codes that are associated with the exhaust temperature from being logged and the engine monitoring system will not function for high exhaust temperature.
"Engine Oil Temperature Sensor" Installation Status
This parameter is used to configure the system with an engine oil temperature sensor. This parameter must be programmed to "Not Installed" if the function is not being used or if the engine oil temperature sensor is not installed on the engine. This will prevent diagnostic codes that are associated with the engine oil temperature from being logged and the engine monitoring system will not function for engine oil temperature.
"Coolant Level Sensor" Installation Status
This parameter is used to configure the system with an engine coolant level sensor. This parameter must be programmed to "Not Installed" if the function is not being used or if the engine coolant level sensor is not installed on the engine. This will prevent diagnostic codes that are associated with the coolant level from being logged and the engine monitoring system will not function for engine coolant level.
"Fuel Pressure Sensor" Installation Status
This parameter is used to configure the system with a fuel pressure sensor. This parameter must be programmed to "Not Installed" if the function is not being used or if the fuel pressure sensor is not installed on the engine. This will prevent diagnostic codes that are associated with the fuel pressures from being logged and the engine monitoring system will not function for fuel pressure.
"User Defined Switch" Installation Status
This parameter is used to configure the system with a switch for the user defined shutdown. If the user defined switch is not installed the engine monitoring system will not function for the user defined switch.
"User Defined Switch Active State" Configuration
This parameter is used in conjunction with the user defined switch installation status parameter. If the user defined switch is installed, the user defined switch active state parameter must be programmed to either "Active-High" or programmed to "Active-Low". If the user defined switch is not installed then the user-definded switch active state configuration parameter will have no effect.

Note: Compare the FLS and the FTS from the ECM with the values that are listed on the Engine Information Plate. The FLS and the FTS should only be changed because of a mechanical change in the engine. The use of the wrong parameters could cause damage to the engine. The use of the wrong parameters may also void the Caterpillar warranty.
A programmable engine monitoring system is provided for the 3406E and 3456 generator set engines. The ECM can monitor parameters and the ECM will initiate action if a specific engine operating parameter extends outside an acceptable range. Not all of the actions are available for all parameters.
Cat ET can be used to select the ECM response. Cat ET can be used to program the level of engine monitoring and the delay times.
Use care when you program the trip point and the delay times. The resulting ECM response must be correct for the application. If the acceptable range is not exceeded, the engine monitoring system will accept any setting.
If the trip point for a shutdown is lower than the trip point for a warning, the engine will shut down. The warning will not be activated.
Once a parameter has exceeded the trip point the parameter must drop a certain amount below the trip point before the ECM response will end.
Note: The monitoring system can be locked out. In order to change the settings, the monitoring system must be unlocked. Access the "Parameter Lockout" under the "Service" menu on Cat ET in order to unlock the monitoring system.

Active engine derates that occur are activated when the associated parameter is out of the specified range. When the parameter returns to a value within the specified range, the active engine derate is automatically removed for most of the parameters.
Some derates remain locked even after the parameters return to values within the specified ranges. After the problem is resolved for the following derates, power must be cycled to the engine's ECM in order to remove the derate:
- High exhaust temperature
- High air filter restriction
- Crankcase pressure
