Action Required

Date Code Identification

The date code consists of three digits. The first two digits of the code indicate the week of the year in which the pump was assembled. The third digit is the last number of the year in which the pump was assembled. For example, the date code 150 is the fifteenth week of 1990.

Parts Stock

Check the date code of all 4T6923 Pump Groups in parts stock. If any of the pumps have a date code between 130 and 300, (13th week of 1990 and 30th week of 1990) they need to be removed from parts stock and rebuilt using the parts in the 9T7139 Kit. See the attached procedure and make sure that the pump is in time as described in the Service Manual. After the pump is rebuilt, stamp an "X" next to the date code on the pump identification plate.

Identifying date codes on 4T6923 Pump Groups:

The 4T6923 Pump Groups have an identification plate on the end of the pump. The date code will be 3 numbers in the upper right hand corner of the plate. The date code consists of three digits. The first two digits of the code indicate the week of the year in which the pump was assembled. The third digit is the last number of the year in which the pump was assembled. For example, the date code 150 is the fifteenth week of 1990.

Steering Metering Pump Rebuild Procedure

Use the disassembly and assembly procedure in the appropriate Service Manual.

Under all circumstances, make sure that the pump is "in time" after assembly is complete

The rebuild will be easier if the following suggestions are followed.

NOTE: It is important to keep the steering pump in the vertical position when removing the internal components.

A) Because of the close fit between the sleeve and housing, care must be used when removing the sleeve to prevent binding.

B) When installing the six centering springs, it is easier to install all six at the same time. the springs must be at the top of the slot in the spool after they are installed. when the spool is installed in the sleeve, make sure the ends of the spring are engaged in the slots in the sleeve.

C) After the pump is rebuilt, stamp an "X" next to the date code on the pump identification plate.

D) If the pump has a date code other than 130 - 300, perform the on vehicle test procedure.

E) whether or not the pump is reworked be sure to report the date code in the claim text.

On Vehicle Test Procedure

An improperly timed steering pump may cause unexpected erratic movement of the steering wheel. To prevent possible personal injury, make sure that the steering pump is properly timed as described in the Service Manual. In all cases, keep hands away from steering wheel when first starting the engine after rebuilding or installing the steering pump.

1. Start engine at low idle while keeping hands away from the steering wheel. An improperly timed steering pump may cause unexpected erratic movement of the steering wheel. Turn the steering wheel slowly using the palm of the hand on the outside of the steering wheel. Keep clear of the spokes or the steering knob. If the steering wheel turns by itself, shut off the engine. This would indicate that the steering pump is out of time and must be retimed. See the assembly procedure in the service manual.

2. If the steering wheel does not turn by itself, continue turning from frame stop to frame stop to remove the air from the system.

3. Check the steering for proper action by steering the vehicle from stop to stop at high idle. Make sure the steering wheel recenters itself after the wheel is released. Also, ensure that the steering pump does not steer by itself.

4. If the steering wheel does not center itself and/or the steering pump moves the steering wheel by itself, the steering pump must be removed and checked for an assembly problem.
