NOTE: This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS0497" as Part Number, "7755" as Group Number, and "96" as Description Code.

Steering effort may increase on certain 621E, 623E, 637E, 631E, 637E, 657E, and 657E Wheel Tractors when the ambient temperatures reaches about 32°C (90°F) or above. A new bearing can be installed in the steering control group to prevent the increase in steering effort.

Parts Needed
Action Required
1. If equipped with a retarder, disconnect the two lines from the floor support.
2. Remove the four bolts that hold the hand metering unit in place and remove the hand metering unit.
3. Remove the screws that hold the plastic cover for the steering column in position and remove the cover.
4. Remove the two bolts from the steering column tilt ratchet.
5. Disconnect the steering column return spring.
6. Remove the cotter-pin and pin on models so equipped.
7. Remove the seven bolts and floor support.
8. Remove the steering column as a unit.
9. Remove the retaining ring from the end of the universal joint shaft.
10. Remove the four bolts from the steering column mounting brackets and separate the steering column from the floor support.
11. Remove the existing 8W0005 Bearing and install the new 8X7242 Bearing.
12. Install the parts that were removed. Replace the existing 4L8017 Retaining ring with the new one.
NOTE: Do not install any spacers (washers) between the hand metering pump and the mounting flange or floor support. Make sure that the mating parts are clean.
Service Claim Allowances
NOTE: This is a 1.5-hour job.
Parts Disposition
Any parts removed (with the exception of cores used for Caterpillar Remanufactured parts) can be rendered useless and scrapped immediately upon completion of the repair.
