Fluid Spillage Containment
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to the Tools And Shop Products Guide, NENG2500, for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
1. Drain the oil from the oil cooler and drain the coolant from the cooling system into a suitable container for storage or disposal.
2. Remove four bolts (2) that hold the oil cooler support bracket to the engine.
3. Remove four bolts (1) that hold oil cooler bonnet (6) to the engine.
4. The weight of oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5) is approximately 24 kg (53 lb). Attach a lifting strap to oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5). Attach the lifting strap to a suitable lifting device.
5. Remove two bolts (4) that hold oil cooler elbow (5) to the water pump.
6. Use two people to remove oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5) as an assembly. The weight of oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5) is approximately 24 kg (53 lb).
NOTE: Put identification marks on the oil cooler, oil cooler bonnet and oil cooler elbow for proper alignment during assembly.
7. Separate oil cooler bonnet (6) from oil cooler (3).
8. Remove O-ring seal (7) from oil cooler bonnet (6).
9. Separate oil cooler elbow (5) from oil cooler (3).
10. Remove O-ring seals (8) from oil cooler elbow (5).
11. Clean oil cooler core tubes (9) with a 3.81 mm (.150 in) diameter rod.
NOTE: The following steps are for installation of the engine oil cooler.
NOTICE |
---|
Check the condition of all O-ring seals on the engine oil cooler and oil filter base. Use new parts for replacement if an O-ring seal appears to be worn or damaged. Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals before assembling the components. |
12. Put O-ring seal (7) in position on oil cooler bonnet (6). Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seal.
13. Align oil cooler bonnet (6) with oil cooler (3). Lubricate the bore of oil cooler (3) lightly with glycerin and install oil cooler bonnet (6) into oil cooler (3).
14. Install O-ring seals (8) on oil cooler elbow (5). Put clean engine oil on the O-ring seals. Lubricate the bore of oil cooler (3) lightly with glycerin and install oil cooler elbow (5) into oil cooler (3).
15. Use two people to put oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5) into position on the engine as an assembly. The weight of oil cooler (3), oil cooler bonnet (6) and oil cooler elbow (5) is approximately 24 kg (53 lb).
16. Put the oil cooler in position on the engine and install four bolts (1) that hold oil cooler bonnet (6) to the engine.
17. Install four bolts (2) that hold the oil cooler bracket to the engine.
18. Install two bolts (4) that hold oil cooler elbow (5) to the water pump.
