ACTION REQUIRED
If stick cracking occurs, refer to REHS3344, Special Instruction, "Procedure for the Repair of Cracks on Reach Sticks for Certain Excavators", for the Rework Procedure. If the butt weld on PT4 boss is beyond height specification during inspection or after welding repair, please follow grinding procedure to remove the surplus height of seam. IMPORTANT: If the stick is weld repaired, please attach pictures of the failed stick including stick serial number, actual operation hours, and the cracking position when submitting the warranty claim. |

General Grinding Procedure for eliminating the welding surface at high stress concentration area. Refer to RENR8648, Disassembly and Assembly, the removal and installation procedure for the stick group, for 336D and 340D Machines. 1. To facilitate access to the inspection area, place the stick in the extended position. Refer to Image1.1.1. |

2. Use a weld gauge in order to measure PT4 boss butt weld. Refer to Image1.2.1. |

3. If the measurement result is beyond 4mm, refer to Step 4 - 5 in order to remove the surplus height of seam. 4. Use a grinder in order to eliminate original both sides of the PT4 boss butt weld until parallel with base metal. Refer to weld seam grinding area in Image1.3.1 and 1.3.2. |

Note A: Ensure that the weld surface is smooth. In the case that the surface is too rough, buff grinding will be necessary. Note B: Do NOT damage the base metal when grinding the original weld seam. Note C: Needle peen the repaired area in order to maximize structure life. 5. Use Cat authorized paint for painting the welds. |
