The 160-8178 Connecting Rod Pin End May Fail on Dealer Reconditioned or Reused Connecting Rods for Certain 3412 Engines {1225}

Usage:

3412 38S
Engine
3412 (S/N: 38S1-UP)

Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The Reuse and Salvage Guidelines contained incomplete and inadequate information to accurately and sufficiently guide the dealers to successfully recondition 160-8178 Connecting Rods. The rod was listed in the incorrect table, and there is not a correct spacer available for this rod.

Solution

Illustration 1g06395099
(D1) 61 mm (2.402 inch)
(D2) 101.6 mm (4 inch)
(D3) 12.2 ± 0.2 mm (0.480 ± 0.008 inch)

Use new or remanufactured connecting rods if failures of the 160-8178 Connecting Rod have been experienced following dealer service.

The 3400 9 degree taper tooling should be used for pin end bushing replacement and verification of retention, as shown in Table 44 of the Reuse and Salvage Guidelines, SEBF8064. The pin end of the rod must be properly supported to ensure alignment of bushing bore and mandrel, a 6V-3197 Spacer can be modified to the dimensions in Illustration 1. The bushing must be installed with the pin end of the connecting rod heated to 195° C to 260° C (383° F to 500° F).
